So now I'm in Thanksgiving prep mode since we're hosting 11 people (well maybe 10, little sis has court today, so who knows where she'll be).
What's on your normal Thanksgiving menu?
Here's what we've come up with, we're trying to keep it simple.
Turkey (DH is going to call about getting a fried on or having a local place fry one we bring in)
Ham
Stuffing with sausage
Biscuits/Rolls (MIL)
Sweet Potato Casserole (BIL)
Mashed Potatoes
Green Bean Casserole
Butternut Squash Casserole
Corn Pudding (MIL)
Salad (BIL)
Cranberry Sauce
Pumpkin Pie
Apple Tart Mini's
Chocolate Pie (MIL) I'm fighting DH on this one though b/c MIL can't really cook and I want good desserts.
I'm wondering if I should add something else to dinner, maybe another veggie like a broccoli dish?
Re: Thanksgiving Menu
That is totally enough!!
We usually have totally traditional (umm I think anyway), turkey, gravy mashed potatoes, green beans, bakery bread (buttermilk or french), sometimes croissants, stuffing, corn, salad, cranberries, & for dessert it's always pumpkin pie only. Some polish stuff woud be kraut, & kielbasa.
When my grandmother was alive she would seriously make all that plus a chicken and two cornish hens just because she was worried that not everyone would want turkey.
I'm glad you're trying to keep it simple... what would COMPLICATED look like??? :-)
You've got plenty!!! Look at it by category:
MEAT: Turkey, Ham
GREEN: Salad, Green bean casserole
ROOTS: Sweet Potato Casserole, Butternut Squash Casserole
STARCH: Mashed Potatoes, Corn Pudding, Stuffing, Rolls
OTHER: Cranberry Sauce.
DOOOOOON'T fight DH on the Chocolate Pie. You'll have plenty that people will eat. If you're concerned that (a) her pie will be inedible and (b) people will need chocolate after all that food, then pick up some nice bakery butter cookies to put out on display. NOOOOT worth arguing with DH over something as simple as MIL wants to bring a pie and I don't think it will be good enough for these 10 people. If people don't eat it, that's fine. Events like this are stressful enough for you to worry about that one.
Kathy we're not really "fighting" over the chocolate pie so much as I want a good chocolate dessert. Last time MIL made her "chocolate pie" it tasted bad, like so bad, I could barely swallow a bite and had to throw out my piece.
And really most of the dishes are super easy to make, also I think my mom is doing to do the butternut squash and make one with nuts and coconut and one w/o for the picky eaters.

This post is evil. Now I'm starving.
FWIW, I throw a thanksgiving for friends almost every year that has ranged from 10-20 people. This is what we usually have:
-a turkey proportional to the # of people. I have a lot of white meat eaters, so we usually go for 1.5-2 lbs per person - so for 10 people, I would buy a 20 lb bird b/c I'm crazy like that and I love leftovers. The largest bird I ever cooked was 28lbs. Hell yeah.
-3-4 recipes of stuffing
-a vat of mashed potatoes
-biscuits
-1-2 veggie sides
Dessert:
1 pumpkin pie, and 1 apple pie
so... hungry now....
This. This is how I was looking at it too. Must be an HR brain
.
Turkey
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
Stuffing
Carrots
Boiled onions in milk and butter
Squash
Spinach
Cranberry sauce
Dinner rolls
Pumpkin pie
Apple pie
Chocolate creme pie
This intrigues me, is it a side dish or do you put it on something? I have never heard of this before.

It's a side dish. I'm not 100% sure how dad cooks it. I think he just boils the sweet/spanish onions in some water, milk and butter until they are soft all the way through. I'll ask tonight how he cooks them and let you know.
Niiiiice!
I totally think you have enough! I would never argue with a broccoli dish, though. Broccoli is my favorite, lol.
I'm working on my menu this morning, too. Everything we're fixing is locally grown or raised & organic. We're also putting a healthy, yet yummy, twist on some traditional Thanksgiving dishes. I'm so excited
