I'm worried my novel is too fluffy

Like it's not going to be really deep or have suspense or surprise... maybe a little predictable. I used to love reading chick-lit type novels, but I've been reading more and more fantasy or suspense or mystery type things and now I feel like my book is going to be lame...

Am I alone in this?

Re: I'm worried my novel is too fluffy

  • My novel has no beginning (I started in the middle) and thus far reads like the most cliche Devil Wears Prada ripoff you've ever read.  But it's gonna be fab, I'm sure of it.  Wink

  • I'm worried about lots of things with my novel, so it's easier to give this advice rather than take it, but don't worry about it. Who cares if it's fluffy so long as you're having fun writing it? You can always make it less or more fluffy in the revision.

    I agree with this!

  • Ditto PPs.  Just get this draft out.  Revisions to de-fluffify will fix any problems!!

  • thanks, everyone! i really appreciate the support. i am pushing through, trying to get a little bit of good meat in it, but fluff is okay too. it's not like anyone is going to read it anyway!

  • Write now.  Edit later.  You don't have time to worry now.  lol

  • Definitely agree with everyone else.  Write, write, write!  Don't worry about what you've written now.  That comes later.  The great thing about this being a first draft is that it's okay if it's not what you're hoping for.  You'll have plenty of opportunities to revise, revise, revise.  Wink

  • Last year I tried to write something deep, with an important message, and I just got sick of it. The voice that flows most naturally for me happens to be fluffy and sarcastic and 100% chick lit, so that's what I'm going with. I'm already having more fun writing this year.
