Happy Monday, Girls! Did everyone have a great Halloween? Ours was fun, although there were a couple of "off" moments with trick or treaters:
Every year, we get an influx of kids from some city neighborhoods whose parents (or someone) drive them out to our community to trick or treat - no kidding - you actually see the car pull up, the kids get out, and the driver waits until they get candy and they drive off to the next community. I haven't decided yet if this is cheating, or just economical...
Well, this one group last night literally accosted my candy basket! Girls, this is a HUGE basket, with 3 or 4 super giant bags of candy in them. They were digging in with both hands and scooping it into shopping bags!
I nicely reminded them to leave enough for the other "ghosts and goblins" and pulled the basket back, and some kid actually held on to the basket and wouldn't let go!!! Finally, I yanked it back, but it was practically empty. Some of these kids didn't even have on costumes (which maybe their families couldn't afford), but they were quite rude. And the kicker? One of them heard my dogs barking and asked if she could come into my house to play with them...you already know what that answer was!
I saw another group of trick or treaters, and there were two little skeletons among them - and one was smoking a cigarette. Really???
By and large, it was fun watching the little ones, who I really feel enjoy the holiday best, and they are super adorable in their costumes! My favorites of the night: A "chik-fil-a" cow with an "eat mor chicken" sign around the neck, and a dog dressed up in full ballerina attire, including pink satin booties!
How were your Halloweens?
Re: Happy Monday - Halloween version!
We don't get trick or treaters, which makes me kind of sad. I would love to see all the kids in their costumes. Hopefully next time we move we'll get a place where they come around.
And I can't believe that kid hung on the candy bucket like that! That's insane. And I'm also a firm believer in home-made costume that don't cost anything that you make from all the random junk in your house. They could have come up with something!
We went to my IL's house, they got about 20 trick or treaters. And they were all really polite and nice...by the end we had to almost MAKE them take more because we had a lot of candy left! Thats crazy that the kids were that greedy where you are! Especially with no costume.
DH & I at the Light Festival
My stepdaughter had a little drama with her trick-or-treating- she has a friend next door that she usually goes with, but this year the friend was going to their cousins (locally) and invited Randi to go with them. The cousins (esp one of them) are very bratty and rude, so Randi was conflicted whether to go or not with them. Her (awesome) big brother talked to her about it and suggested she not go with them since she has an awful time anytime she's been around these other kids, and to come with him and his friends instead! She agreed and had a good time with Reid and two of his friends. The sad part is that when she was on the phone telling her friend she wasn't going with her the friend hung up on her :-( She didn't seem too awfully bothered by it which is good- can't control how others behave and they'll probably resume as buds later in the week.
I decided to "dress up" since I was handing out candy, Alex was playing hockey during prime ToTer time. I was a bride! Ha! I wore my dress and veil and it was lots of fun! I had been procrastinating taking it to the cleaners and getting it "bagged" for good, so it was a good opportunity to get to wear it again for fun.
The other fun part of the weekend was making homemade ravioli with DH on Saturday- I posted it on our food blog so you can see what I made! I posted pictures too along w/directions.

Actually, same here - Our neighborhood is an older community, with neighbors who have lived here for 25, 30 and 40 years (and some for more), whose kids are grown with their own families. So we don't have many "trick or treat" aged kids in our neighborhood...the vast majority of our trick or treaters are from city kids who come up (or, as mentioned above, are driven out) to our neighborhood in the outlying suburbs...I don't mind, really, but this year for some reason, some of those kids were definitely out of order!
That's hilarious! And an awesome costume idea.
I was actually really disappointed. We normally get maybe 30 ToT'ers, but this year we only got one group of 5
I love seeing the kids in their costumes. It was cute, when I opened the door they kind of cheered, and quickly put their masks on, I guess that they had not been having much luck with my neighbors, and that could explain the low number I got. I gave them all a big handful of candy. I have a ton left over now, ugh.
And Lisa, I love that you thought to wear your dress! How fun!
Happy Monday! I think all around there was a smaller amount of trick or treaters....I think it has to do with it being Sunday and there is not a definitive time to go.
We had a few ones at the house, your average snotty teenagers who don't dress up. I make sure to call them out on it every time, and ask them what they are. Its always interesting to see what they come up with.
DH and I and some friends went out on Saturday...here is a pic of our costumes:
We had a fun time getting out for a bit, especially with his crazy work schedule...any one else dress up?
I LOVE that hehe... and that's funny cause two days ago i told DH that i should be a "bride" for halloween as a joke and he looked at me like i'm crazy.. ahhh men lol

Taking a break from being poked and prodded
I'd have accosted the driver by then and told them to take their brats and go trick or treating around their own neighborhood, and do NOT come to my house without a costume. That's the point of Halloween. No costume, no candy. If you can't afford to buy one, it's cheap, quick and easy to make one. Yeah, I said it. Nothing I hate more than disrespectful little schitts!!! ETA: If they were little kids, I might bend on the "no costume, no candy" rule. But for high school kids - forget it. Ain't happenin'.
I actually had a nice Halloween. Mike took Amanda & her friend out and I handed out candy, BS'd with the neighbors and got to know some of the others.
I had 10 bags of candy so I was letting each kid pick 2, then by 7:00 I was giving them each 4-5 pieces to get rid of it. 3 little boys said they were coming to my house every year because I gave them 5 pieces of candy; little do they know I won't be over-buying next year.
By 7:45 it died down so I went inside and my freind came over with her son. Right before they arrived a bunch of high school girls came up to the porch and I gave them one piece each because I watned to save some for my friend's son. After they left I took Amanda home and came home & watched Nosferatu.
Very fun first Halloween for us - but I thought we would have WAY more kiddos. Our neighborhood is full of young families. We maybe had 20-30 kids in total, but we had three HUGE bags. Needless to say we have leftovers. Ugh.
Our town is very structured. There's a tradition of having "beggar's night" on the 30th, and they set the time from 6-8pm. All our visitors were under 12, and we recognized most of them as neighbors.
My parents came over (Mom has grandbaby fever in the worst way, so any chance to see babies in costumes!) and Dad and DH helped keep the dogs entertained and stress-free with all that doorbell ringing.
My favorite? We also have a tradition where kids have to do "tricks FOR treats" (I guess in the 1930s there was a lot of vandalism with trick OR treating, and during the war they even made it part of the war propaganda, insinuating that if you caused mischief on Halloween you were helping the Nazis), so the kids have to do something entertaining if they want candy. Most tell a joke. We had a lot of bad ones, but it was so cute to see the toddlers trying to remember the riddle they'd been rehearsing! "What kind of car does a cat drive? A Catillac!"
We had a fantastic halloween! We live in grad student housing, so there are very few kiddos around and NO trick-or-treating. Also, in SoCal, most parents take their kids to outdoor malls for trick-or-treating (it is well lit, there are security guards, it's safer, and there are a TON of kids). DH and I usually go to the mall on Halloween night to see everyone's costume, it's awesome! In addition to that we also went to the zoo (cute kids in costumes are always at the zoo on Halloween), and saw even more cute costumes. Definitely no like I remember Halloween, but I'm glad we can see kids even if they don't come to our house

Ah yes...this is why I don't answer the door on Halloween. Seriously if I wanted to donate food to someone I don't know, I would take some canned food to the local food pantry....ok done with my rant.
My weekend was good. We got our Christmas lights up, raked some more leaves, and I actually got to sew!! It was nice to finally make some things
Shmel's Blog
Mel - So funny, and yet so true! I was saying to H that I don't know if I want to do that again next year...more and more, it's these random kids that we don't know from goodness knows where, and it's not as much fun.
Kudos to you for getting your lights up!!! I have to say, we are the "Griswald" house on our block, although several of the other neighbors caught up to us last Christmas...lol...so I am very much forward to getting the lights up this year - wahoo!!
