Is anyone using the IUD for birth control?
I really want to switch from the pill to the IUD but i've heard that its recommended for women that have already had kids..which I haven't..but I really like how the IUD sounds and I really like how low the hormones are, I feel like all the hormones from the pills I've been out are really messing with my sex drive which is really bothering me. Another thing I'm worried about too is not being able to have kids easily after the IUD if it messes with fertility or anything.
Does anyone know, or is using it? do you like it??
Re: BC question
I do not use an IUD (actually doing the whole NFP thing)... but, I have a friend who had one and is currently pregnant ith her second child. I don't think they had much trouble conceiving once it was removed, either.
First of all, this will prolly be TMI...
I have an IUD, mine is the Mirena one, which is the hormonal one. I didn't want to do Paragard (copper) because I had heavy periods and cramping before BC, and the copper one supposedly increases that. Paragard no longer has "already had children" stipulation in the literature, though, and according to my GYN, it has a bit smaller diameter.
Mirena, while it does have the "already had children" recommendation, seems to be more of a CYA provision. Nulliparous women have a higher rate of expulsion, and insertion isn't as easy. Also, there is always the 1 in a 1000 chance that it could perforate your uterus.
That being said, I love it. Love, love, love it. I had heard horror stories about side effects, insertion pain, etc., but I thankfully haven't experienced any side effects that I perceive as negative. Also, the insertion pain wasn't even nearly as bad as people lead me to believe, and I didn't even take any pain meds beforehand.
Results for me: I have my sex drive back, and none of the vajayjay problems I personally had on the pill. I also had a very light period the first two months, and I'm hopeful that I will have none in a couple more months. I feel so much better emotionally, now also!
How I decided: I looked at all I could find about both IUDs, good, bad, and ugly. Then I asked myself if I could accept all possibilities. For me, it was a "yes", and I was a good candidate for it other than not having had children.
Another tidbit: This is secondhand information, and I don't know a time-frame, but my GYN told me when I got mine, that the Bayer rep told her they were working on a smaller diameter version of Mirena for nulliparous women. No ETA, though.
Sorry for the novel...if you have any more questions or want to talk about it feel free to PM me or even just ask here...I don't mind talking woman stuff!

Like Kim I use the Nuva Ring. It's awesome - so nice to just pop it in and forget about it for 3 weeks. I will say though, that I have similar side effects from BCP too - low sex drive being the main issue. The Nuva Ring hasn't helped that...at least not for me.
I considered an IUD as well but for whatever reasons I just never went through with it.
I'm actually really interested (and trying to get DH on board) with NFP. I've been on BC for over 10 years and just feel like I need to get rid of all the hormones and let my body go back to normal. Especially if we're going to start thinking about kinda in about a year - I know it's going to take some time for my cycle to get back to normal.
Ellen - you said you're doing NFP. How long have you been doing it? I'm assuming your TTA - had any scares? Was it hard to learn?
Do a ton of research on the Mirena before you decide to go that route. I'm one of the many horror story ladies who used it. My biggest issue, though, was that with all the problems I had...my docs said couldn't possibly have been caused by it. (Severe emotional problems, constant joint pain, cystic acne, weight gain of over 10 pounds in 2 months, the list goes on...) I found the monograph released by Bayer Corp. (although only released in Canada...not in the US.) and made sure all of my docs had copies of it!
Bayer flat out admits that the amount of hormones released by Mirena is equivalent to taking 2 mini-pills daily and is systemic in your body within hours of insertion. Yet drs in the US will tell you the hormones only act locally in your uterus. ???
If you really want to go the IUD route...and if you're sensitive to hormonal fluctuations...still talk to your doc about the copper IUD. Works without the hormones.
Good luck whatever you choose. Like PP said...there are women out there who use it and love it! I do the depo injections every three months. No periods, no PMS, no nothing! (But then again, I've heard horror stories about women on depo...tons of weight gain and stuff. But I've never had a problem with it.) Goes to show how different we all really are!
I had the Mirena IUD. I didn't have much insertion pain, just a little discomfort, about the same as when you get a pap smear. I had a child but by only by c-section I never dilated.
I hated mine. I bleed for about 3 months straight then I would spot all the time. I was nauseated all the time and just wiped out. I ended up getting pregnant on it and miscarried. My doctors were awful though and didn't do much so i ended up getting pretty sick by it. Found another doctor and have been a whole lot better.
Everyone has a different reaction to everything. Make sure that your doctor is willing to take it out when you ask them to if you don't like it.
I use NFP too and I love it. I quit the pill before we got married and took an NFP class at a local church. It was EASY to learn. No scares yet, and I'm trying to prevent pregnancy. Not ready to hear the pitter patter of little feet, although it's nice knowing that it'll be easier to get pregnant when we do want to.
It's just really nice to know my own body and what it's telling me. I have a friend who has mirena and loves it, but she has a child already so I don't know how much of an impact that had.
