Do you bring your rent money to your landlord on the 1st of the month or do they come and get it from you?
The reason I'm asking is...for the last 3 months (since we started renting for the first time), I've brought the rent money (cash, not a check...they prefer it that way for obvious reasons) to them and it seems like they barely want it. What I mean is they told me to come back because they were going out or something. Have you ever heard of this? I don't know...it's weird. Anyway, today I go over there and give them the rent and she says to me "Can my husband bring you the receipt later, I'm just cleaning up around the kitchen". ummmm...ok. =/ So, I said to her, have him leave it in the mailbox and I will have my husband get it when he gets in from work. Well, my husband came home and it wasn't in there so he walked over and asked them for the receipt, which the husband turns around and says, ooh will you be home? I'll ring your bell and drop it off. Now, what's the problem here? I handed you $1500 for rent, how hard is it to write out a frigg'n receipt? Am I over reacting? I'm nice enough to give you cash every month, is it that difficult to give me a receipt in return? So, my husband said to stop going over there and let them ring our bell for the rent from now on. ummm...ok. What would you do?

hmmm....yea, I'd feel weird handing cash over every month. We have a check automatically sent directly to the management company (by our bank, so I don't have to do anything!) by the 5th of the month. I think it arrives around the 3rd. Can you switch to just giving them a check?
If you're going to go to the trouble of giving them hard cash....they should be more than willing to give you a receipt the second you hand over the cash...not 2 hrs/2 days later.
Thats our situation now, and its totally annoying.
We do the same thing, pay cash and such. We also have to walk it over, she'll never come to pick it up. I dont get the delay in getting you your receipt though. I wouldnt give it without getting the receipt immediately.
Id end up saying "Oh, you dont have time to write the receipt now? Let me know when the best time is to come back so we can do it then" and LEAVE with the $$.
OR, start paying by check and mailing it to them a couple of days before the 1st.
You are not obligated to pay cash.
Thanks girls!
I agree Alisha...if I can go out of my way to the bank, solely to get them cash and then they can't take 2 secs to give me a receipt right then and there, then I'm going to stop giving them cash.
When I first found this place (through an REA), I said to her that I wanted to pay check. Then after everything is settled she turns around and tells me they want the rent in cash. I had no problem with that due to getting a receipt, but if it's going to be a pain in the a$$ like this every month, it's gonna end. I have a baby coming next month and there is no way I'm tracking these people down.
P.S. He never brought the receipt over last night. Now what?
That is what I don't trust. I would use that as my excuse to give them checks from now on.

Tell them if they can't give you a reciept you are going to have to start paying with checks. Don't give them the money until they have the reciept ready to give to you. Blame it on an imaginary lawyer family member - "We totally don't mind paying with cash but my cousin is a lawyer and he is very concerned about us, so he told us we cannot give you cash unless we get a receipt on the spot, or we need to pay with a check. You understand, right? He's just looking out for us." LOL, I blame everything on imaginary relatives. :-)
We used to pay with cash too, after 2 years we kind of stopped worrying about a receipt which was probably dumb of us but our landlords were cool and loved us so we trusted them. But you don't know these people from a hole in the wall, so don't give them any money without proof that you gave it to them!
I can do imaginery lawyer relative. lol
Exactly, I don't trust anyone and if I was thinking clearly when I handed them over the money, I would have asked first if I could have a receipt now. I'm heading over there right now and getting one. I will keep you all posted.
See? Thats what I dont like. The fact that they took your money and come up with excuses not to give the receipt immediately, and even after promising it - they still dont do it. Do you have their email address? I would put it in writing - just say that you need the receipt for the rent that you gave them in cash on XX date.
Further, I think you know that the safest thing for you to do now is pay solely by check. Tell them that you're not comfortable with the cash arrangement, and that this way its easier for them - they dont need to write you a receipt as your check serves as such.
They cannot demand you pay them in cash. You have to protect yourself, and with a baby coming you dont need the drama.
Ack.
I've never had to pay cash for rent. I suspect that they want it in cash so that they don't have to report the income on their taxes. I wouldn't hand over cash without a receipt though.
I can't tell... did you ever get one?
Oh, ok... I saw your post above.
