IUD costs

I am interested in getting the Paragaurd IUD put in but I am pretty sure that my insurance is not going to cover it. I couldn't actually talk to anyone when I called our prescription hotline so I'm not for sure. I was wondering if any of you with paragaurd would mind telling how much you paid and if your insurance covered it, which provider you have?

I am trying to decide if I want to pay out of pocket for it and that depends some on how much it would be.

Re: IUD costs

  • When I looked into this option I found it to be anywhere from $500-$1000. I think it will depend on where you live and where you go. When I checked with my OBGYN last year it would cost me $850. I dont have insurance that covers regular doctor visits (only emergency).

  • Mine, including the device and my dr.'s fees for insertion, came in around $900, of which I paid a $15 co-pay.  I have Cigna insurance.  I was very pleasantly surprised by the coverage.  I'm not sure this would fall under prescription coverage--it should be under medical instead.

Whatever your insurance ends up covering vs. what you pay out of pocket, consider how much BC you're getting.  Even if you pay the entire amount out of pocket, you're still getting a lot of birth control for not much money.  If I had ended up paying that entire cost myself, it's 10 years of birth control for $90/year, which is practically nothing.

  • Insurance did not cover it at the time (of course now that do :(

I paid $750. That was the device, insertion and office visit.

  • I have Mirena, but my dr's office called my insurance for a pre-cert to see if it was covered & what it would cost me, then called to tell me what it was before my appt. I ended up paying $30 for everything.

  • My Mirena was also covered with a pre-cert by the Dr. office.  Check to see if that is an option.  It is a lot of BC for a reasonable price and I LOVE it.

  • Most PPO's will cover the cost of the IUD. I ended up paying a $15 copay for mine. I also have Paraguard, which lasts for 10 years

. If you are concerned about cost, think of it it this way, you pay roughly $80 every 3 months for birth control which is $320/year. That's $3200 for 10 years versus $900.00 or so if you had to pay out of pocket...it's a good deal!

  • Yikes, I can't believe how much some of you have to pay for your IUD!

I am in Canada, so have a Flexi-T (same idea as the Paraguard). I am getting my second one put in in a couple weeks. It cost me $75 (which my health insurance may actually cover) - I think it was fairly similar to that five years ago too. No insertion/visit fees or anything of course, since we have universal health care.  They are good for 5 years, so that is pretty darn cheap on a yearly basis!

  • My doctor's office quoted me $600 (unfortunately insurance doesn't cover contraceptives at all).  It makes sense if you're on the pill, but right now we're just using condoms.  You can get 500 for about $60 online, and I'm just not sure that I want to shell out the extra cash when we still have a box full of condoms!
