Hurricane hit our HM spot!!! WWYD?

This kind of freaks me out....St. Lucia was hit by a hurricane this past weekend. 12 people are dead and that number is expected to rise because some bodies are still buried.

The town that was most hit it Soufriere, which is the town we start our HM for the first 4 days. In the news reports that town can't be reached by phone or roads.

We are supposed to leave for our HM in 3 weeks....what do we do? What if the roads aren't fixed, the resort is wrecked? Etc? We are also going to Sandals for the last 4 days and I have no idea the condition of that town either. (p.s. I'm an idiot and didn't pay for travelers insurance) Embarrassed

  • Try to contact your hotel once you can and your travel agent. See how much damage is done at the hotel, whatever you were planning on doing, see if it is still do-able. Also check the hotel website, they might have something on there. Try to contact the sandals as well.

Good Luck! Crossing my fingers for you!

  • Ugh, that is so sad. I absolutely love St Lucia. I'm not sure what to tell you about your trip, though. From what I remember, there is only one road that goes all the way around the island and connects all the towns. It was seriously hilly and winding. Everything else is just forest. I don't know what they're going to do, but it could take quite awhile.

  • Can you reach the people at Sandals?  Maybe they'd have more information about the condition of roads and resorts?  Maybe if they're still up and running, you could spend the whole time there (assuming the other resort is a no-go)?

What a bummer for you, and how sad for all the people who live there.  I hope that it still works out for you to go, and that you can still have a wonderful time.  I imagine your tourist dollars would be much appreciated in the post-hurricane economy... assuming they have the facilities/resources to accomodate tourists right now.

  • Oh no! I was concerned about this and asked over and over what would happen. We didn't pay for travelers insurance either, but the travel agent we had said that if the resort was shut down/airport isn't open that we would be able to reschedule the same trip at a later date. Hopefully you can have the same option! GL!

  • Our original HM destination was devastated by a hurricane 3 months before our scheduled arrival (Cancun- 2005).  Our travel agent took care of helping us pick another resort and rebooking everything.  If you have a travel agent, give them a call.  Otherwise get on the phone to whatever website you booked things through and see what they are saying.

Next time think about trip insurance :-).  Our trip insurance for our 2 week trip to Peru was only $190 and we bought through www.insuremytrip.com with Travel Guard.  Definitely worth the peace of mind...
