Well no wonder!

I have been feeling tired and sluggish lately and it turns out that my vitamin D level is really low again.  If you've been feeling blah lately definitely have your vitamin D level checked.

eta:  Disclaimer:  I'm not a doctor so definitely talk to a REAL doctor before having any tests run, obviously.  I have been reading more and more though about low levels of vitamin D being linked to fatigue.  It's worth looking into!

Re: Well no wonder!

  • Is this done at the doctor?  Or how do you check it?

Blood test.  I had labs done anyway last week to check my thyroid and he had them check vitamin D too.

  • It is a huge problem for us northerners.  I made my DH go in for a physical last year and his was so low that they wrote him a prescription for it because he needed it in quantities larger than in a typical multi-vitamin!  Tongue Tied  We just don't get enough sun exposure at our latitude plus if you use sunscreen like we all should, we essentially block out our ability to create it naturally from the sun exposure we do get.

Exactly.  My doc said that everyone should take vitamin D all winter.  I'll be taking 4000 IU a day all winter which is a lot but I seem to deplete it faster than normal.  He said my "D tank is running on empty."  Silly Dr. C.  He also said 10 minutes in the sun with no sunscreen is okay and healthy but in reality who really does that?  It's tough.

p.s.  He said to take vitamin D3 and not just D.  (I'm not sure what the difference is.)

(Again....this is coming from just one doctor.  Talk to your own if you have any questions!)

Most of us don't get enough and what qualifies as "enough" is hardly that! I take over 6,000 IUIs (*or whatever the measurement is) daily. I think the "recommended" amount is about 400 - or maybe that is what is in a basic multi-vitamin? I order mine on Amazon since anything you would find in a store is pretty low (max 1000).

My BFF had a prescription to take 50,000 IUIs a week - but she had some other issues that were causing levels of multiple nutrients to be drastically low - but like Kiz, she was feeling really sluggish and run-down and went in for a check-up and found that her levels were no where close to where they needed to be. Most of us are too low.

More and more studies are coming out about the benefits of high doses of Vit. D  (fights seasonal depression, illness, supposedly reduces risk of breast cancer) - and even REALLY high doses, most agree that the numerous benefits far out weigh the risks of "overdosing."

  • I just ordered some.  I've been exhausted lately.  Maybe it will help.

  • I have also found that vitamin B12 and iron also help me with my sluggishness. I used to be tired ALL. THE. TIME. Seriously. Started taking those two supplements, and I feel so much better. And I can tell if I forget them for a day or two. I have some vitamin D in the cabinet I should start taking again.

    Thanks for the reminder Kiz.

  • OMGoodness I totally forgot all about Vit D! I was wondering why I am so freaking tired all the dang time! I need to go pick up a good multi-vit for the winter! Thanks for the reminder!

  • Yep, 'tis the season.  My gyn reminded me today that I need to start supplementing again.  I also probably need to pick my b12 back up, as it tends to drop when I am stressed.

That + trying to cut caffeine = Sleep
