how do you store your dishcloth?

We constantly battle a smelly dishcloth because my husband never wrings out the water when he drapes the dishcloth between the two sinks. It makes me CRAZY! I at least wring the water out before I drape it between the sinks or over the tap... But that method of draping is part of my insanity. Its unsightly and messy and no matter how much I wring, the cloth still stays damp, which results in smell. There has got to be a better way to store our dishcloth and I need to know how! PLEASE HELP US!!!

Re: how do you store your dishcloth?

  • I do the same thing as ya'll, but mine usually dries out and doesn't smell.  You may want to get some thinner dish cloths and see if that helps.  I got a jumbo pack of basic white washcloths and they dry out faster than the others I was using.  I would also change them out more often...I change mine every day.

  • I use thin ones that dry quickly. Also, after using it, I wring out as much as possible and lay it out between the sinks and then spritz it with my spray bottle of vinegar/water solution that I use for cleaning. That helps to prevent the smell. I replace every 2-3 days.

  • Ohhh vinegar water! I'm a big fan of vinegar for everything ... how did I not think of this?!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not missing on out something great (other than thinner dishcloths) and that we're not the only ones draping the cloth between the sinks. Phew!

    Thanks for the tips!

  • I drape mine over the tap since we rent and only have a single sink. We ring ours out and I make sure to always rinse it well after using it. Like PP, I too replace it every couple days. Good tip with the vinegar water though

    This.

  • I use washcloths and microwave them for 3 minutes every night and that kills any bacteria that is causing the smell. You could probably do that with dishrags too, just make sure they're wet when you mic them.
  • We have a caddy on the back side of the cabinet door under the sink.  This way i don't have to see it.  After I'm done using them, I have a bucket I toss them into on the basement landing until I take them down to the laundry room.

  • I don't use dishcloths because they disgust me. The thought of wiping my dishes or utensils with one, then eating from or with those items, skeeves me out. I could heave just typing this.

  • So what do you use?  I'd rather use a dishcloth than a nasty sponge...

  • I have tons of dish cloths, so I toss them over a bucket in the laundry room to dry (which is right beside the kitchen) after each use.  Once I have a whole bucket of dish cloths and rags, I wash a load.  I use a sponge/soap wand to clean dishes though, so cloths are just for cleaning the table and counters.
  • My great aunt actually keeps hers in the dishwasher. Sounds weird, I know, but it makes a lot of sense. She grabs it from there and puts it back when she's finished, so whenever she runs the dishwasher, it gets cleaned, and because it lays on the top rack, it dries out fairly quickly. They've never smelled badly when I've used one! (Of course, this won't work for those of us without dishwashers!)
  • I've never used a dish cloth. We have one of those OXO stainless steel refillable scrubbers. The brush is removable, so I just throw it in the dishwasher with every load. They seem to hold up pretty well. I replace the brush every month or so. I will use a cloth to wipe down my counters, but I only uses it once before washing.

  • We have enough dishcloths that I can throw one in the washer after each nightly kitchen cleaning.  My issue is our stinky sponge.  Ick.
  • I second the vinegar idea.

Also, Tupperware has some clothes, that dry fast and they never smell. I LOVE them! I typically wring the dishcloths out and hang over faucet and toss in washer after a day or two.

  • I wring it out and let it drip dry.  I usually replace with a clean one next time i need to wash a few dishes.  Also, I love those basic white cloths (bar towels) because they dry well and they are great because i use bleach in my towels and sometimes a few drops in my dish water. Its great for plastic.
