I mentioned that I was shopping for a Macbook, but now I'm not so sure I want to spend that much money. If I don't get the Macbook, I'll get a small laptop (I.e. slower processor, not a lot of memory, basically a larger netbook).
The initially wanted a Macbook because I plan on taking web design classes this spring and I thought the Macbook would be better for that. We do have a desktop at home that I can use if I end up with a small laptop. Also, I think having experience with both Macs and PCs would be a great addition to my resume.
What say you?

Re: Someone decide for me
My work computer is a PC as is our home computer. Both have IE, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Then I say do it, but again I'm completely biased.
What sort of web design class is it? strictly HTML? CSS? JAVA? You can speak my language.
Get the Mac. And I'm not saying that because I want one and might possibly come try and steal it from you if you do.

The University is ordering me a new macbook. I'm quite giddy. I already have a 27" imac at home and an ipad.
I may need Macaholics anonymous.

Uh yeah...I was so anti-iPad until I played with hers. If I wasn't going to take these classes I'd probably get one.

Is it something were you need CE credits and need to take it through a CC or just something you are interested in learning? If the latter, I can recommend some really good books and sites that will let you teach yourself pretty easily. Dreamweaver is fairly intuitive if you have a little help though I honestly never use the WYSIWYG features because I like to work directly in the code.
Don't do it! The ipad has ruined our marriage. Zane never surfaces from it. He's constantly looking up every random thing that pops in his head, and we fight over it for fantasy stat watching on Sundays. Apple should offer marriage counseling with every purchase.

It's so damn FAST! I wasn't even done thinking of what website I wanted to look at and it was already loading it for me.
"How do you know, ipad?! How do you knooooooooooow?!?"
Just something I'm interested in. I get free tuition through work, and we're redesigning our website at some point next year. I figured it couldn't hurt.

We have a macbook and I like it. I'm not one of the zealous "OMG I'LL NEVER GO BACK TO PC AGAAIINNN" people though. I like PCs a lot more for work-- things like word processing, database/presentation creation, etc. And I like the mac for surfing the web, pictures and more of the gadget-y stuff.
If you are looking to get some computer training in, you should check out www.lynda.com. It has in depth video tutorials on almost any software you could possibly want to learn about. And if you are potentially going to be a new mac user, I think it even has a bunch of different apple tutorials. It costs money to have a membership, but it's only around 25 bucks a month or something, and membership gives you access to all of the tutorials in the library. My work pays for us to have access to it and I love it.
If they don't at least teach you basic HTML tags and have you create things in split code/design view in DW, tell them you want your money back. Same if they don't teach you any CSS. If they start telling you about font tags, run. Run far, far away.
As for this computer issue, I have had the same dilemma for months and is precisely why I don't own a laptop right now. I have a feeling when the time comes, I'll get a PC. Maybe in a few years I'll get a tricked out Mac, but the basic $1k mac is not that incredible.
On the other hand, you don't really get viruses on Macs. Not yet anyway, that may change in the next couple of years.

If anyone is still teaching font tags, they deserve to be strung up at noon. That jank is old school.
Thanks guys! Here's the course description:
Students will learn how to construct, produce, edit, and manage Web sites for business using Dreamweaver. Students will learn how to import and format text using character styles, paragraph formats, add images to web pages, create image maps, create hyperlinks and lists, create layouts using tables and frames, create interactive forms and PDF files, and upload pages to a Web server.

That part would bother me if you are wanting the most up to date skills, but if you are just wanting a working knowledge to play around with it will be okay.
tables = OK and still used in certain circumstances
frames = nobody uses, and they are the devil for getting indexed by Google. Hopefully the class description is just old and you don't mess with those.

Work gave us all Macbooks about a month ago and I have only used it a few times. I confess I am a little intimidated by it. I feel like left is right, up is down, I am clueless.
Someone tell me about all the cool things I can do with it because pretty soon I'll have to show the kiddos how to use it and once our smart boards get hooked up, I'll need to wow them all. Thankfully they are only 7 and impress easily.
