Sooo... a possible job opportunity arose today... (kinda long)

As many of you know... I don't exactly "love" my job.  My occupation, yes.  My job, no.

Someone who used to work for the company I am currrently at approached one of my coworkers about a position at her current place of employment.  Coworker is not a great fit for it (just found out she's PG and the benefits do not include full maternity coverage).  So, she informed me about it ( I will be on Kevin's insurance soon, so not a concern for me).

It would be at a Primrose School (educational child care center) working as the chef.  The current enrollment is at 125 and at max it would be 165.  I would be the only chef in a small kitchen.  I would have the freedom of creating the menu and most everything is from scratch.  I'm quite intrigued  by the information that I have recieved.

They are offering $0.66 more than what I am making now (which isn't a ton but more is more).  Hours are pretty much the same (Mon-Fri 7-3, paid holidays) but it would be a bit further to drive (maybe 30-45 min instead of 20ish)

I'm going to contact the lady and see what more the job entails and what the expectations/standards/requirements might be.  Apparently the current chef is a bit of a tyrant and the teachers are afraid to even go into the kitchen to get ice.

I also have been informed that the lady doing the hiring is looking for more nutritive recipes (less sugar, whole grain, etc) and that my coworker LOVED working with her and actually left the account they were at because this lady left.

Just wanted to share with you ladies.  Kevin didn't seem as excited about it as I was.  I guess he just questions whether it is something I would enjoy (PS... I LOVE working in the kitchen by myself without people annoying me!).

OH.... AND THE BEST PART!!!!  I would get 50% off of child care while working there!!!! That's huge!

  • That sounds like an amazing opportunity!! I used to work at a daycare and I LOVED the chef there. She was sooo sweet (like an adorable little grandmother) and the food was SO good. I got really fat when I worked there because she used full fat everything. Like homo milk.

  • That sounds awesome! I also worked at a daycare that had a chef who cooked all the lunches and I LOVED it! It was so great for the kids-- they had a healthy, well rounded lunch everyday and nutritious snacks. You could also do some cooking lessons with the kids if you really wanted to-- I'm sure the teachers would love an opportunity to get the kids in the kitchen!
  • That sounds awesome!!  I got excited just from your excitement!!  I would totally go for it!  And 50% child care AND being able to work where your child goes to day care all day??  Yes please!

    Hee Hee Hee...

I just giggled out loud and Kevin goes "what did they say now?"

I used to call you my nest friend from Canada.  He makes me call you by your name now.  He says its just easier that way.  PS... I even call you J IRL.... Janice is just weird.  And then all I can think of is friends and her ANNOYING voice!

  • It's definitely worth looking into.  Working in a kitchen by yourself sounds like a peaceful way to spend your day.  Even if the pay isn't that much more and the drive is longer, it's worth it if you enjoy your job more.

  • I agree it's worth looking into! The increase in wage probably wouldn't show up in your bank account if you're driving further... BUT if you're planning on getting KTFU soon, the childcare is huge! Of course if the environment sounds better than your current that could be worth it on it's own. Keep us posted!

  • That sounds awesome!!! Sounds like such a fun job, I'm kind of a bit jealous...getting to cook fun food that you want to that is healthy: sounds like a win/win! keep us posted!
  • Homo milk...leave it to J to pull that out of her hat!

Sounds like a great opp Jenny! It doesn't take much to look into it. And even if you went through with the interview process, it is worth it to know more about what's out there.  Can't wait to hear the update when you find out more. :)

  • My biggest thing is follow your bliss would this new job make you happier than the job you are at now?

With the drive the money is a wash but if you are happier your life will be better!
