DVTs, PEs, and BCPs...oh my!

Anyone else had blood clots and now at a loss for what birth controls to use? I have two clotting disorders and have been told that I can never use birth control pills again and will prob have to be on blood thinners for the rest of my life. My husband and I are not keen on using condoms forever. Any suggestions ladies?

  • You could try the non hormonal iud.. Paragard

  • NFP

    Diaphragms

    Cervical Cap

Take a look at Planned Parenthood's website for a comparison of birth control methods:

    http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/birth-control-effectiveness-chart-22710.htm

And why the heck didn't you cover this with the doctor who took you off BCPs?

  • I'm on coumadin for the rest of my life (lovenox when i get pg) due to 4 dvt's. Ask your doc about your specific case but i am taking the mini-pill. It's progesterone only instead of an estogren/progesterone combo like other bcps. It's the estrogen that can't take w/o raising your risk of another clot.

The mini pill doesn't regulate your cycle and you may still ovulate but the progesterone makes it so the egg doesn't stick to the wall of the uterus. The caveat with these is that you have to take them at the same time every day and i'm talking like within the hour or so. (ask doc or dr. google for more info about it).

  • Have you ever considered charting?  I just started and love it.  I know people chart to TTC and also to TTA.

  • Definately talk to all your doctors- ob/gyn, pcp, and hematologist.  I had a PE and was on lovenox/coumadin (complications from those) then fragmin.  I got Implanon- more reliable than the mini-pill, less hormones than depo.  See implanon.com for more information.  It was ok by my ob/gyn.  My hematologist said no hormones.  BUT your safest bet will probably be nfp or other barrier methods.  Good luck.
  • thanks ladies! I have gotten mixed reviews from several doctors and was starting to feel overwhelmed. With all of this going on we are also moving in six months and my ob/gyn retired without notice. argg! Sometimes it is just good to know you aren't the only one out there. :)
  • Psychmuse,

You are so right. It was great to see your post and know that we are not the only ones struggling with this. I had a PE back in May and our love life has suffered since then because we are soooo not used to the condoms anymore. I personally have broached my pcp about FAM and he thinks it is bogus (and I think he is super smart but like many Dr.'s I think he just doesn't get FAM). I see my gyn on Friday and will discuss it with her then. But all my doctors say no birth control pills so... but for me it may only be a short term thing that I have to take the coumadin (please and thank you God) depending on my blood test results over the span of a year once I get off the coumadin will let me know the long term plan. But mostly I am leaning in the direction of the FAM/NFP but I am totally with you on not having to do the barrier method long term.... HTH!

  • I had a DVT in July during my pregnancy and have been on Lovenox ever since.  My OB/Gyn is waiting until I am 10 weeks postpartum to give me a Paraguard IUD.  She said it's that or condoms for me.
