I've had BOTB like crazy lately, like to the point were I'm secretly hoping the echinacea I'm taking for my cold will screw with my BCP (my mom knows someone this happened to). We're not planning on a baby until DH is finishing his 3rd year of school. He just started 1st yr. I we're not in the right place for one now anyway, and I know this, but it gets to me. What's my problem!? DH said to me last night, "We should get a puppy. They make people happy, it's been proven." I've actually been looking on petfinder now and again. I've never had a dog, and we travel at least twice a year....but it would be nice to have a pet again and something to keep the babies off the brain.
Re: confession
A dog is NOT going to solve the problem of wanting a baby, trust me!
They are not the same at all - also, having a dog is more difficult in some ways. Ok, really only in the travel ability thing...I can take a baby anywhere, but I most certainly can not take Stella everywhere. As much as we love her, it is a total pain in the asss.
Like, this weekend: we are going to take her with us, because she can stay at the hotel we're staying at, and we're driving. But it is going to be awful for me knowing that she has to stay IN her kennel at the hotel when we're out shopping. When we're in the hotel room it's fine, but she has to be in a kennel when we're out in case any hotel staff need to be in there. That makes me feel really bad!
Also, airlines put a blackout on travelling with pets over Christmas. Any other time of the year is fine to fly with a dog, but of course the one time of year we actually HAVE to fly to be with family, she can't come. And doggy daycares around here close over Christmas, so we can't send her to one of those while we're gone. And none of our family lives close, so no one to dogsit. We literally have no idea what we're going to do with her over Christmas, and that breaks my heart.
I get the fever every once in a while when I'm around my niece or other babies at our church. I always remind myself that I'm not ready to give up sleep and my freedom just yet and that gets rid of it haha. HH and I are planning on being married 5 years before we have one, so 4 1/2 years to go!
You should totally get a puppy though! Ours is 6 months old and we love him! I tell everyone we got a puppy so I could practice being a mom before we have the actual baby lol It was definitely different around our house when we first got him, but now I can't imagine not having him around!
I've had BOTB a bit lately too, hanging out with all of our neighbors cute kids. But then I remind myself how much I like sleep and I realize we can wait another year or so.
Puppies are great though, we love our dogs so much. Last night one of them puked 3 times throughout the night though...and I'm exhausted today. However, they are worth it, I can't imagine my life w/o my dogs now.
Rather than a puppy...what about an adult dog that's more mellow / already been trained, etc and just needs a good home?
We got our dog from Petfinder and she's 2. Gone are the puppy crazies but she's still young enough to have lots of life ahead of her (God willing) and she's in good health. But we didn't need to do all the training that comes with a puppy. And she's great. I love her companionship during the week while DH is gone for work and she's our 1st baby, really.
The travel thing can be annoying but we've arranged for friends to come and housesit so far on the 2 weekends we have gone away since adopting her. We'll probably do a trial overnight for her at the boarding place near us in 2 weeks when we go to NYC for the wknd...it's not impossible. Like with a kid, your life doesn't stop because you have a dog - but they really are fun.
IF (that's a big one) we would get a dog, I was thinking of getting one that's maybe a year or two old. When my family got our cat she was a year old. She was still young enough to be fun, but we didn't have to worry about training her to use the box. I cannot believe how much money some of the shelters want for these dogs that have no where to go! I guess if their shots/neutering is done ok (?), we paid $30 for our cat from the SPCA back in the day.
I don't know if getting a pet really solves the problem or not. DH has been wanting a dog for a long time, and it gets lonely when he's gone studying all day and all night. We can't get a cat b/c of his allergies. It's in the back of my head.
