I Cannot Deal

I hate ASPCA commercials.  My sister was a vet at the ASPCA and I love and support them.  I buy stuff from them to give them money.

But I can't watch the commericals.  They destroy me, and I don't care that my sis said that all the animals in the commericals are likely fine and have been adopted by the time I'm seeing it air.  The point is they were once that mangled and sad.

And now that it's holiday season starting, there are ASPCA commercials, Humane Society commercials, and WSPCA commercials.  All wonderful groups, all doing wonderful things.

But I can't stand watching them, and it's driving me crazy.  My heart hurts, even after I change the station for the minute the commercial runs.

Re: I Cannot Deal

  • I'm with you.

I always want all of them. I am a wreck also. Those and the Pedigree ones.

And H wants a new puppy. So imagine how he is.

  • Oh god, I forgot those Pedigree commericals.  I feel guilty that I actually buy my pets better food & won't buy Pedigree... because not I'm not giving to those animals.
  • Ohhhh, those commercials immediately make me change the channel.  I'm with you - I support those groups and donate when I can, but those commercials absolutely break my heart.  Depending on my mood at the time just the brief commercial can make me cry and hug one of my dogs tightly.

  • I totally feel you on that. I always turn the channel because I can't handle those commercials. Gah.

  • The worst one is the one with Sarah McLachlan Angel song.  It breaks my heart.

    OMG! This!

I also hate that they run the commercials more often during the Holidays. I don't think pets as gifts are a good idea. I feel like a lot of them are going to end up back in the shelter. Crying

ITA. I always hear about the "surprise" puppy or kitten going back because the receiver couldn't handle having a pet. Getting a pet should be a unanimous, informed decision!

  • My sister cries every time she sees those commercials. I am apparently a cold hearted *** because they no longer affect me. I can't go IN a Humane Society though. I want all of them, especially the adults that are less likely to get adopted.

Yeah, it's pretty much the dumbest gift ever.  My sister's frog is one that was returned to the pet store because grandma bought it for grandson without asking mom, who said "not on your freaking life."

And when it's a gift, people go on impulse, without researching breeds and finding out what sort of pet would be right for them.  Granted, most of the shelter dogs are mutts anyway, but if they've got an idea of the mix of breeds, you can at least make a somewhat informed decision if you take the time.

The only time a pet is ok is a gift is when it's parents getting it for their own kid, with the understanding that if the kid is young, the parents will have to do most of the care for it.  Meg was a gift to me from my parents, but I was dying for another dog & was in my 20s.  They knew it'd be good.  Same with my first kitten, Daphne - a gift from my sis and I was in my 30s.

It's no more cold-hearted, I imagine, than me now being able to sit across a desk from a victim of domestic violence and being able to hear about the beatings and horrors without crying.  You get a little hardened to it when you're exposed to it a lot.

But yeah, I can't see the commercials ever not making me cry.  Lots of things make me cry, though.  I'm pathetic that way.

I think I'm in this category because they've never bothered me.

Some of our local channels will air messages from soldiers whose families live in the viewing area around the holidays. Those I absolutely can't handle.

Some days the ASPCA etc commercials make me tear up. They always hurt my heart to see them.

And the soldiers, I couldn't stand that... I'd cry every.time.

Have you seen the video on youtube that shows a bunch of soldiers surprising their loved ones when they come home? It's like 10 minutes long and I cried the whole time
