PIP Wednesday

Busy day - sorry this is a little late in the afternoon!

Today - post a pic of your favorite thing about your hometown!!!

Food? Sports Team?  Famous resident?  What's interesting about where you are from???

Re: PIP Wednesday

  • I am from Staten Island, NY

Home of the best pizza ever (Denino's - super thin crust, brick over) and Alyssa Milano from Who's the Boss (Loved that show!)

  • The only thing "famous" for my little rinky dink hometown is this:

  • For now I'm going to go with this because I spent MANY hours on and behind that stage as a student and I still volunteer much of my time there now.

  • I am going to go with the amazing cliffs to the Pacific ocean.  There are a lot of movies that were filmed around the Palos Verdes cliffs.  Man this makes me miss home

    image

  • OK - I have to say, this is one time I'm really proud of where I come from! There is such a rich history in Baltimore as well as in many other parts of MD, that it is literally impossible to just pick a few! But I'll try to share some of my fav things that we're well known for:

    image

USS Constellation, Last surving flagship 1859-1861

    image

    imageimage

Ok...I can't stop!! LOL Top to Bottom:

    1. Crabs, baby!!!

    2. USS Constellation, the oldest remaining flagship of the civil war era - 1859. Docked in our Inner Harbor (which in and of itself is a landmark).

    3. USCGC Taney - The last surviving warship from Pearl Harbor. Docked in our Eastern Harbor. I pass both of these National Treasures on the way to work every day, and it really is amazing that we get to see them everyday, and don't really think about their significance...

    4. The Great Bambino. (Could've also been Cal Ripken, Jr., Brooks Robinson, Johnny U., Alan Ameche, Michael Phelps...and the list goes on!)

    5. Fort McHenry. This is my view when I go down to the water on pretty days to decompress from work. The Star Spangled Banner was written here in 1814 by a 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. The  rag tag group of Patriots fought hard overnight at this fort and held off the best Naval regiment in the World to that time...

There was just so many to choose from! I guess I gave it away...I'm a history geek, so this PIP was dangerous for me!

  • Where I grew up:

Midland, MI: My dad is part-owner of a micro-brewery in our town.  Since Midland is the home of Dow Chemical (largest chemical company in the world), all of the owners and workers at the brewery (including my Mom and Dad) are PhD Chemists or Engineers - it's nerdy awesome!

     image

    Where I live now:

San Diego, CA: Probably the best zoo in the country/world!  They have a traditional zoo (which is huge) as well as a wild animal park (where the animals are spread out a lot more, more closely resembling their natural environment

This is the Bryn Athyn Cathedral, and this is the church I grew up going to. It has stained glass windows all around and it's absolutely gorgeous.

    image

And this is across the street-it's a museum (Glencairn museum) but it used to be someone's house! Obviously they were rich (their descendants still are). The museum is amazing and I got to go here every year while in elementary school-high school and even had classes there while in college.

  • My hometown is nestled in the mountains so we have beautiful rivers, lakes great for swimming, fishing and hiking.  I stole this picture online bc I lost most of my pictures a while ago so only have recent ones :(

Where I live now we have gorgeous beaches... white sand and emerald color water.  It's beautiful!

My home town is "famous" for two things...Orange Groves and Murals so I thought this picture captured both!

My hometown is Yorktown, VA. About a mile from my parent's house is where British General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington, effectively ending the Revolutionary War.

The second picture is the Yorktown Monument in dedication of the event. What's also cool is that German soldiers fought in the ranks with the French (our allies) and now Yorktown is sister cities with Zweibrucken, Germany. So every year both cities choose 10 students and set up an exchange. So I got to spend a month before my senior year living in Germany for a month. It was amazing.

  • So we will start where I was born/grew up:

    New York City:

    The Skyline:

    image

The Street Vendors (Dirty Water Dogs and Pretzels...yum!)

    image

Where I live Now (Suburbs of Manhattan, Orange County):

Velveeta! Woo! This also means that we have a cheese festival every fall....come on...who wouldn't love that:
