Poll: BYOB or not?

We're thinking of having a party-ish gathering at our house over Thanksgiving weekend.  We had one last year and called it a game night and it was a lot of fun.  We served slow-cooker BBQ chicken sandwiches, queso and other snacks and honestly I can't remember what we did for beer/wine except I do remember that we put out liquor and no one really drank that.

Now I'm thinking that if we call this a Party this year then we should provide the drinks. I just think it's weird to invite people over and then they have to worry about bringing their own booze and not accidentally drinking anyone else's stuff in the fridge, etc.  But that if we just say "we're having some people over" it's okay to do BYOB.  DH disagrees, says that BYOB is always ok and that all our friends would be cool with that.

Re: Poll: BYOB or not?

  • totally fine to BYOB!  it gets really expensive when you factor in beer, red and white wine, etc - and that's not even taking liquor into consideration, which is a whole different animal, IMO.

maybe buy one or two 24 packs of your favorite beer (in case you have leftovers) and call it a day.

  • I refuse to answer this poll until later in the evening so that I can choose the last option.

For a casual get together, I think BYOB is fine. We tried it a couple of weeks ago for a game night and most people did BTOB. I provided a bottle of wine, other people brought beer, we had a liter of Coke and Sprite on hand, too. No one seemed thirsty.

  • I would not have an issue BMOB if it were a casual gathering. I might think it was weird for a dinner party or something. Ditto pp who said to get a 24 pack of Shiner (depending on how many people) and call it a day.

  • BYOB rocks my world. It's impractical for a hostess to have everything people like to drink. I'll get Bud Light and everyone will say "I only drink Miller Lite" hence the beer in my fridge still from Abby's party GAH!. If I get Merlot and Chardonnay, it seems only ladies who like Pinot come to the event. You can't win!!

  • as a hostess, i never do BYOB... it makes me feel bad. If i invite people over, I feel like I should provide everything. a lot of people ask if they can bring something, i tell them I've got it covered but if they want to bring some beer/wine they can feel free. i don't buy *as* much but we still have plenty.

with that said, i don't think twice if someone else says its BYOB. Smile ridiculous i know.

  • I always try to have something, depending on the type of gathering. If I call it a "party" and I'm expecting a big turn out (say, for DH's birthday) I'll get a keg, several bottles of wine, and one type of liquor drink. If it's a small, casual get together, I'll have a few bottles of affordable wine. And then there's all the in betweens.

Usually I'll give an indication of what kind of alcohol I'll have - "Keg! Wine! Vodka!" as in, hey, drink my alcohol. Or I'll just mention that I'll have wine, or mention that I'll have a small assortment of beer, as in "I've got some alcohol but if you're picky, you may want to bring your own." I've never had a problem. People almost always bring something, so don't worry about providing enough for evreyone to indulge all night, but I have noticed that providing at least some alcohol enhances the turn out Wink

We do a lot of BYOB, really. If it's just an informal gathering, I'll have at least a couple bottles of wine on hand, but really just let people bring their own, and I think they prefer it that way.

  • Like PPs mentioned, I'd have some alcohol available, but wouldnt go all out to provide an assortment.  I'd stick with stuff you like to drink, like PPs mentioned, so you're not really out anythign if you buy it.

Agreed.  I've been to several parties like the one you're planning AustinBride, and for those, the hosts wrote on the evite "We'll have X, Y, Z, so if you want something else, feel free to bring it."  Sometimes the XY&Z are non-alcoholic (for non-drinkers or mixers) options, sometimes it's red wine and a specific flavor of beer.

  • We just had a party for my moms retirement. In the invitation I said that we would have some beer and to bring your own drinks if you would like something else.

I was surprised that almost everyone brought their own beer, wine, and liquor. Someone even left a bottle of Jack Daniels here, which we dont drink.

I think it is always polite to bring a bottle of something if someone has invited you over, so hopefully they will.

A tip - we got 2 of those mini keg things at HEB (Like Miller Lite) and they are a ton of beer for around $18 and it actually works like a real keg!!
