Faulty smoke detectors

Recently we've been having trouble where our smoke alarms go off randomly.  They are wired in electrically and also have batteries.  I have tried testing and replacing batteries but it still seems to happen.  We've had to resort to shutting off the breaker and pulling all the batteries out until we can get someone out to look at the wiring possibly since I know nothing about what could be causing it.  Well we turned the breaker back in this weekend to test them and because the same breaker is linked to our doorbell and we wanted it for the trick or treaters.  They didn't go off at all over the weekend so I didn't turn them back off, and of course they went off while we weren't home, and our neighbors ended up calling the fire company. They had to break in the side lock to verify there was no fire, and luckily the door itself isn't too damaged.  So they're turned back off again right now but I really need to get someone out to figure out why they go off sometimes.  I'm thinking a short somewhere, I just don't know how to determine where, or what caused it.

Thanks for letting me vent, I'm not frustrated at the neighbor or the fire department, had there actually been a fire I would have been very glad they came, I'm just frustrated that they are tripping without reason.

Re: Faulty smoke detectors

  • Oh that would be annoying! I'd call an electrician or someone who works with this kind of thing. You're probably right -- there's got to be a short somewhere or something similar. I hope it gets worked out for you.

  • We had something similar happen that our alarms were going off randomly.  Are they wired into a security system?

  • We actually had this happen about 2 months ago, it was terrible.  Ours started randomly going off and the fire department kept showing up at our house (which I did appreciate, in case it was a real fire).  Ours are wired to a security system.  Our security provider had the wrong phone # down so when the alarm was going off, they were calling the wrong #.  We would call them and tell them NOT to send the fire department but they always did.  One night they went off 3 times and the fire department was pretty pissed off.  It was a very frustrating experience.  The security provider came out and had to fix the system.
