NOT MY HAIR!!!

So I went my hair dresser last night to get my hair colored. I asked for a chocolate brown, carmel highlights.  I told her I wanted to "warm" it up; however, I didnt want any red to it.  She proceeded to tell me that to "warm" it up she would have to put a little red into the mixture. I said "Okay, as long as it doesn't look super red and more chocolate brown."  "Oh, of course!" she said.  Currently, my roots are PURPLE.  
This is my question, do I go back to her and see if she can fix it, even though I don't feel totally secure with her coloring skills or should I go to a salon that has a lot of good ratings and reviews and see if they can fix it. 
If I do go somewhere else, do I ask my hairdresser that turned it purple for my money back?

  • First, I would give it a few washes before doing anything else to it. A lot of that will likely fade in the first week, and going in immediately to have it stripped out will cause unnecessary damage to your hair.

    Second, if you don't feel comfortable with her skills then by all means go elsewhere. More likely it was a communication issue, unless she is truly inexperienced. Chocolate means different things to different people though- hershey's chocolate? milk chocolate? swiss chocolate? dark chocolate? raisinets? That's where the communication errors come in.

    I would not expect to get your money back, though. At best, someone else in the salon could fix it for no additional charge but this depends on the salon set-up (are they employees or independent contractors?). 

    Third, if you go somewhere else I would ask for specific rec's rather than just going somewhere with good reviews and ratings. Make sure you go to the SPECIFIC colorist that is recommended, not just the salon.

    Fourth, warm chocolate brown with caramel highlights does not have to have *red*. It usually has some gold (yellow) with a touch of mahogany (red/violet), but it should not be actually purple even in the sunlight. That's pretty much the opposite of "warm".

  • Wow, thank you for your post.  It really isn't about the money.  I will take the loss, however, I am not sure that I can stand the few days of having purple hair.  I am going out of town this weekend, it just isn't a good time....when is? :)
    I totally understand about the miscommunication, but I brought her a picture of exactly what I wanted.

     

  • Yeah, there never is a good time!

    I'm not saying the miscommunication is your fault, not in the slightest. It's our responsibility as colorists to know where the pitfalls lay, and how to get around them. Which questions to ask, etc. If she didn't ask them then the chances of you getting what you really want are pretty dang slim.

  • If you need an amazing colorist ( I may have just made up that word) I HIGHLY recommend Jamie at Urban Betty. I have been going to her for over a year now and have never had someone get my hair exactly the way I want to like she does. Granted, I am a blonde, but if you go on Yelp and check out Urban Betty there are TONS of comments about how fabulous she is. Just thought I would pass that along and good luck getting the color you want! I know how devastating it can be to walk out unhappy and knowing you have to deal with it!
