I've spent all afternoon wondering if I was being filmed for one of those prank TV shows or if these guys were actually cult leaders.
I was out for lunch today and while I was eating my meal I noticed two men in red gowns/robes devouring a whole roasted chicken, the kind you buy pre-cooked at the grocery store. A woman sat near them and they struck up a conversation.
The men claimed to be buddhist monks. She asked them why they were eating meat and they said that modern buddhists eat meat because "vegetarianism is very unhealthy". They also claimed to eat very few vegetables and live on a mostly animal-product diet.
The men were very rude, at one point commanding that the woman fetch them more napkins, and made fun of a woman in line at Starbucks for being overweight (which was ironic because they were both rather portly).
They also talked a lot about wealth vs poverty and while they seek to end poverty, they understood that "some people have worked very hard for their wealth and we respect that." They went on to say that they really disliked teachers, of all people, because while providing children with an education is a laudable goal, to accept payment for doing so is immoral. However, they didn't have any problem with professional athletes or celebrities making millions for doing not much.
There was more.. but the whole thing was so odd. Aren't Buddhists supposed to be like the Dalai Lama? I really can't picture him devouring a whole roasted chicken and making fun of someone for being chubby.
Re: I overheard the weirdest thing today
That is quite bizarre. Not very dalai lama-esque, isn't he all about zen and good things and not harming anything?
This is going to sound very naive but are there buddhist monks in many places? I always imagined them only being in the Tibet, etc area but like I said I could be far off. Strange none the less.
Sort of. We were in the little Safeway Cafe. I don't know if all Safeway's have them, but the one near my work has a deli where they make fresh sandwiches and sell prepared salads some hot food like french fries. There is a Starbucks right next to it, with a small seating area in the middle. So they went to Safeway for the roast chicken, I went for the sandwiches, and there were people there for the Starbucks. I can see how that would be confusing though.
I don't know, but I know there is one in my city. I had to Google it to make sure (I didn't know there was one in my city before this incident so that really made me think they were cult leaders/on TV) but the website says there is one here and about a dozen across Canada

Hm. Well I can tell you for sure that this people were not monks of buddhist orgin.
I have quite a few buddhists and practicing monks in my family so I know quite a bit about the whole thing. These people were probably stressed up for some sort of halloween thing and wanted to have fun with it.
Yes, monks live all over the world. They have monasteries in pretty much every province in Canada but I seriously doubt these people were monks.
I can't get over the fact that they were devouring a whole chicken in public. That alone is weird...not to mention the rest of it.
I know, right? With their fingers, no less. And they were not eating anything else with it. Bizarre.
Yep. Ditto this.
