Stationed in LA, any insider info?
Hi ladies- My husband and I are 90% sure we will he will be stationed in Louisiana for his next assignment starting in summer of 2011, and I'm working on gathering information about the area. As of now, we're looking into Covington (he'll be working around New Orleans, and I'm applying to a program in Baton Rouge), and was hoping some of you may have some information on the town, or any other recommendations for towns between NO and BR that we should check out. Thanks so much, and looking forward to the move, cheers!

Hello! Are you looking to buy a home? Covington is a very nice town. Also check out Mandeville, LaPlace, Madisonville. All of these are on the Northshore. A couple nesties live in Slidell but IDK how much they love it there.
You could also look in places along I-10 between NO and BR. Kenner, Metairie, River Ridge are the only three I can think of off the top of my head but I know that others will have some suggestions.
Good luck! We are a wealth of information so let us know what else you need!

I live in Slidell, but I don't think you'd want a daily Slidell to BR commute. Slidell to NO is a breeze though. Covington is quite nice, as are Mandeville, Covington, and Madisonville.
You may also want to look down the I-10 corridor as well - Prairieville, LaPlace, Kenner, Metairie, etc.
If you're interested in the Northshore, my DH is a Realtor here and does rentals as well. You can pm me your info if you'd like. If not, no worries.
DH & I both grew up on the Northshore so I have plenty of info to share if that's where you end up setteling. Like Ali said Slidell would be a pretty long commute into BR but Mandeville/Covington would be a good fit. Prairieville would be a great option too.
If you haven't checked out NOLA.com it's a great website and has sections for the Northshore (St. Tammany) plus the surrounding areas. It is one of the best places to look for info on entertainment, festivals, and restaurants. It will give you a great feel for the city and the culture.
BTW love your siggy pict!
You all have been really helpful- thanks! I think we were both really drawn to Covington because it reminded us a lot of other places we've lived- historical pride, good restaurants, a small town feeling but still close to ammenities, etc. I'm pretty sure we're not looking to buy @ this point, and would love to find a single family home to rent if possible, but we're not against apartment living. I'm not sure where DH's station will be in NOLA, but we should be finding out soon. We're definitely looking in more of the small town (even rurual) settings, as neither one of us are huge city people. I'm heading over to check out the NOLA.com website and I've also been on the Covington town site and they've been pretty good with information.
Ali, I'll send you a PM now, as it would be awesome to have a local realtor to talk to, thank you!
MrsSpell- Thanks! The pic was taken @ DH's graduation from Officer training, probably my favorite of us!

If he has to commute to NOLA, Destrehan is about 20 minutes away, it's a mix between suburban and small town with the essential stores close by, and it also has some historical pride (two plantations). :-)
