Daycare Costs?

With a recent promotion at work...I have babies on the mind. DH and I plan to start trying in a year but I would like to know the average cost per week for child care?

I know a year seems like a little early but I'm a big planner (was engaged almost two years). Knowing how much to expect to pay for child care will let me know how much we need to save before we should start trying.

I know the area affects the cost so; we live near Wayzata/Minnetonka area but I work in Rogers so it would be anywhere from Minnetonka, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Rogers area.

Re: Daycare Costs?

  • We haven't needed childcare yet, but when I was researching in home daycare costs I got quotes from $170-190/week for an infant.  I know centers can start at $250/week.  I didn't do too much research on those because there was no way I could pay that much for childcare.

  • I am with you on being a planner! When my son was an infant we paid $190 a week in N. Maple Grove at an in-home daycare. When he turned two we switched to a center on Maple Grove/Champlin border and paid $250 a week (that is with a 10% discount) until he was around 2 1/2  and then it dropped to $220 a week (again with a discount). I have the rate sheet for the center and the infant rate is $390 a week :0 Needless to say this is why I passed on a center when he was an infant because we need full time care and this is A LOT of money!

I have a friend that paid around $160 a week for in home daycare in Rogers so the inhome rate drops a lot the farther out you go.

When I was looking at centers pretty much every one offered a 10% discount if one of the parents work for certain companies (pretty much all the big local ones).

  • DH and I just searched for a daycare for this spring. We live in Eden Prairie and were looking for a center in our area. We got quotes from 5 different centers, some chains and some independent. The cheapest center we found was $275 a week. Others were between $300- $350 a week. We went with a center for multiple reasons. Daycare centers and inhome daycares are a personal choice but definitely look into both to decide what may suit your needs and wants.

  • We just got a new rate sheet for our center.  Infant rates are:

    5 days - $322

    4 days - $296

    3 days - $261

    2 days - $196

    1 day - $109

We went with a center vs. in-home, for a variety of reasons, including flexibility (our center is open 6:30-6:30 and we can change our schedule every week), availability of more than one or two adults at a time (something I was very thankful for when Liv hurt herself there last week), reliability - I will never get a call in the am that my daycare lady is sick and daycare is closed that day.  We are lucky that we have an awesome center, where Livie adores her teacher.

In-homes will run you $160-$200/week, depending on what you find.

There are pluses and minuses to both though!

Good luck with your decision on TTC :)

  • Thanks ladies! DC is definitely a lot cheaper than I thought. I figured it would be somewhere around $400 a week.

I wish we could start now :) but DH is the sensible one and wants to save, I bet I will thank him someday for that!

  • The woman that we are planning to use PT for the girls charges $225/week for an infant on a FT basis.

ETA: She is in Minnetonka and runs an in-home center, but is moving to a new location outside of her home.

Also ETA: Might want to budget for twins. LOL! I know I didn't take that into consideration! Mine were spontaneous so it can happen to anyone.

oh there are places you could find for four hundred a week. my cousin works for a big name center and she said they base the rates off of the property values and income levels of the area where the center is located.  there are three centers in our immediate area they are three eleven, three fifty seven, and four oh two...we drive ten miles out of our way for two hundred at a center.

  • Thanks for posting this - I have been curious as well. I know what my SIL pays, but they live further out of the metro then we do so it's not really a good comparison.

  • This makes me glad that I live in the south metro.  I pay less than some of the rates for 2 kids in an in-home daycare.

  • You will find even cheaper if you are willing to go to St Michael or Albertville ro Elk River for daycare.  Our neighbor's 2 year old is in a center in Elk River for $189/week full time.

  • The most expensive center I found was Kinderberry Hill. If I remember right, they were about $1900/month. They do have a nurse on staff full time. Second most expensive was Primrose- rates vary by location but are about $340/week. We chose a center because of the hours and that there would be more eyes on our little one. We pay $265/week but it looks like that rate has increased to $280. Our center is in Minnetonka/Wayzata. PM if you want more specifics.

GL.... I thought the daycare search was the hardest thing to do.
