Hi Ladies !
My name is Kate and I live in Northern Virginia, but it looks like my husband and I will be moving to Raleigh area in about 1 year for his company.
We both grew up in SC, but are not really that familiar with NC. We aren't sure, but are fairly positive that his office will be in downtown Raleigh. We don't know what the traffic is like, we are used to needing an hour in the morning to go 15 miles at 7 am ... H would like his new commute to be 30 or 45 minutes ( one way ) at the most.
What we are looking for is single family home ( 3 bd/2.5 bath ) on at least at 1 acre of land ... our price point is about $250K.
If this is possible, what areas would we want to look at ? I've been looking on real estate websites, and have found really cute places in Garner NC but I don't know if that is relative to what we want.
Oh, we don't have kids now, but we will definitely start our family there, so schools are something we would take into consideration.
Thanks so much, this was a lot longer than I expected.
Re: NoVa nestie moving to Raleigh, NC -- help please.
I agree with everything Terp said! Her list of towns is a great one!
I grew up in NOVA and am familiar with the traffic you are currently facing. While Raleigh does have traffic, it isn't nearly as bad as NOVA. And like Terp said, if you have the flexibility to shift your work schedule then you'll be able to live a little farther out and still have a commute around 30 mins I would think!
I also completely agree with Terp about visiting the area. The surrounding towns can get pretty country very quickly. Some people really enjoy that, but others (like me) would prefer to have more access to stores/restaurants/etc.
We moved down to Raleigh from Jersey and bought our house right away (didn't rent). I will say that it worked out for us and we LOVE our location and wouldn't change it. However, I think we did our research (started over a year before we moved) and had an incredible realtor who was great at working with us long distance. She really took the time to get to know us to understand what type of neighborhood would "fit" us. She showed us many different areas and was very honest when describing them, which helped us truly know what we were getting into! If we didn't have her, we probably would have rented for a while to get our bearings before buying. If you are interested, her name is Becky Davis (bdavis@fmrealty.com or 919-349-3159).
GL! And feel free to keep asking questions as things come up!
I would also look into renting for a few months since you are not familiar with the area. Overall traffic should be better than NoVa, but I guess it depends on how far out you need to go if you are set on a specific lot size.
Good luck with everything.
We actually live by Brier Creek and DH works in RTP...his commute is 15 minutes taking I-540 to I-40.
Hi Kate, a little advice about Raleigh from a former New Yorker who came here 5 years ago, now live with my husband in North Raleigh. I teach at a school in N. Raleigh, almost in Wake Forest. The N. Raleigh area is really nice, the homes tend to be more than other areas, but you get nice land and great shopping, location, and it is near Falls Lake recreation areas, which are great benefits, in my opinion! Nice area for families and great schools. The commute to downtown, depending on how far North you go, could be around 30 min. But traffic is much less crazy than in Northern Virginia, I'm sure! We have a 4 bedroom house on almost an acre, bout in '08 for much less than 250. Don't know exactly what the market is like now. But there are many developments being built in many areas of Wake County. Email me if you want specifics about schools. I will try to help! keb0123@yahoo.com
Raleigh is a great, small city with lots of development, good schools, shopping, and close(ish) to the beach and the mountains. We really like it here!
