My job is being cut.

It was officially announced via press release to the investors last night, that I am losing my job.  They are shutting our site down and transferring all work to our sister site in N. Carolina, except for imaging which will just "go away" (this is primarily what I do).

This whole place is in a state of shock.  As cancer research scientists, we just never thought....but, I guess it just goes to show that, in this fragile economy - no one is safe.

I actually had the day off on Tuesday when they made the announcement, and my boss sent out an e-mail for a mandatory staff meeting at 10AM...I e-mailed him and told him I couldn't make it, and he told me I HAD to find a way (I had Dr. appts for the kids at 10:20).  I told him I could not, but I could come in later on in the afternoon.  I was met in the lobby by my boss, supervisor, and "some guy" who I later learned was from corporate HR.  They cut the total global workforce down about 4%, which is 400 people company-wide...

I have til June 30.  Our research will mostly stop sometime after the new year, and the remaining months will largely be clean up, packing, disposing of things, etc.  Some of my co-workers were not even that lucky and got earlier departure dates, so at least I am here that long (lights go out for good June 30).

They offered to map us to positions in N. Carolina which will open  up around the spring.  It is not out of consideration.  Unfortunately, the Toledo area isn't exactly the "science mecca" of the Midwest, so if I want to stay in this field, the odds of relocating are pretty big (unless I get   lucky and get back in at U of M, where I worked from '03-'07).

This really stinks.  I love my job and my co-workers.  I hope to stick it out til the end, but we will see.  I will miss this place a lot.
