Flu shot

Anyone gotten this years flu shot yet? How bad is it?

DH called. He gets it free through work, and it includes spouses. So he called me today to double check what time tomorrow would be good for me to come in. I HATE needles. Like BAD. Last time I got a physical done, it took them between 5 and 10 minutes to take 1 blood sample to screen for diabetes, cholesterol, etc.

Convince me getting the shot is better than the flu. (I know it is, I just don't like shots at all....)

Re: Flu shot

  • If you can find a place that does it, they can give you the flu shot as a mist up your nose, instead of a shot up the arm! I'm terrified of needles also and was seriously relieved when hubby and I went to get them and it was done as a nasal spray! It smelled a little funky, but I'd rather deal with that than getting a shot!

  • It's just like any normal shot.  It takes 2 seconds!  It's no more or less painful than any other flu shot, and it's great because it is a seasonal strain combined with H1N1 and also H3N1... so you're really getting vaccinated for three in one.  I don't know much about the "spray", or if it includes all 3... I haven't heard as much hype about it this year as I heard last year.  We only give the IM injection vaccs at work.

    You should totally get it.

  • I plan on getting it.

I hate needles, but it's mostly because needles remind me of blood tests and when I was pregnant, I had my blood taken 5 times and fainted 3 of them.  I was told it depends on which vein they take the blood from, but it always made me woosy/nauseous and gross.

The flu shot isn't bad since they injecting into me instead of taking from me.  Ask for the butterfly clip!  They use it on kids, and it made it better :)

  • I'm one of those people that always gets a little sniffly/achy for a day or two after getting the shot.  I can guarantee you that it is better than getting the flu...which had me out of work for over a week last fall. (I got sick before the shots were available.  Doc was pretty sure I had H1N1 but was never officially tested.)

This year the shots cover basic flu as well as H1N1...so really good idea to get it.  I was supposed to get it last week, but didnt want my arm to be sore for bowling that night.

I'm going on Saturday to get mine.

  • im super super super super scared of needles (like panic attack wise if i even look at one), but i got the flu shot this year. it was just fine. the prick was one second (i closed my eyes), and they just made me wait 15 minutes afterwards to make sure i didnt have an allergic reaction to anything in it. it hurt some afterwards - my arm was sore for a few hours and i had a little bruise, but it wasnt as bad as i had thought.

    so definitely do it.

  • i don't have a fear of needles, i just can't watch it go into my arm when they draw blood.

Anyhoo, if you do the nasal vaccine it is a live vaccine and can cause some people to get sick. The flu shot in itself is an inactive vaccine and will not cause you to get sick as some people may think. it may only hurt for a moment (some people who give them might have a strong hand) you may get a buise and have a sore arm for a while but i think that's better than the flu.

  • Thanks ladies!! I'm going into where DH works in just a little bit. Apparently the nurse there gave a shot to a doctor once, who wanted to hire her because she was so gentle. (The doc is a pred. for newborns and infants.) So hopefully it won't be bad. I know it's better than having the flu, just needed som reassurance of that!!
