Filing papers?

How do you keep important paper work filed?  I am about to buy a filing cabinet at Staples, but they are so ugly!  Any ideas?  TIA

Re: Filing papers?

  • I picked up "Smart Couples Finish Rich," and applied this filing system: http://www.finishrich.com/pdf/worksheets-step1.pdf

In addition to getting your finances in order, you should keep passports, birth certificates, social security cards (NEVER keep these in your wallet!) and car titles in a safety deposit box.

Hope this helps you; I know it did for me!

  • Pottery Barn has some pretty cute filing cabinets if you're ok with the price.
  • Thanks for all the tips.  Will check out Pottery Barn this weekend
  • My mom bought me a filing cabinet from Target that had a modern look to it. The only thing is it has 2 drawers and a small one and now I'm needing another one. I just set up files for each bill or important info (like taxes, bank, and etc). I just drop it in the file when I'm done with it. This is what works for me. We are all different so I would set it up depending on what is the easiest for you.

  • Thank you for that link!  I was just stressing out about all the paper work and bills I have kept and not sure how to file them.

Do you keep your utility bills?

  • Now that everything is online, I don't feel the need to do so. If you're watching your trends/patterns in usage or spending, I think it's good to keep the previous 2 months for comparison . Otherwise, they just become clutter that you don't need!
