Help with keeping motivation to clean!

Hello ladies! I am a horrible wife, and I never clean! Well I do, but I can't keep myself to set a weekly schedule to clean. Sometimes I got a few weeks without lifting a finger. How do you ladies keep yourself motivated to clean?

Re: Help with keeping motivation to clean!

  • I blast music through the house, put on my running shoes, and time myself. I usually take longer than the allotted time I've given myself, but it helps me get through it knowing there's a timer ticking, for some reason.
  • I find it difficult to stay motivated if I've just spent an entire day cleaning.  It's easier if I do a bit each day, that way I see the difference it makes.

This! And I only clean what's dirty. Chore charts were a waste for me becuase I always felt like I was cleaning things on the list that weren't really dirty. Now I make a list of 5 things I need to get done cleaning wise everyday. 3 easy things and 2 more indepth things. My house has never been cleaner wih the least amount of work.

My list is usually something like

1 load laundry (wash, put away) --easy

    put away partyt dishes---easy

    wipe a bathroom--easy

    vacuum floors- in depth

    dust 1 room.

    My list today is:

clean all mirrors--easy ( swear every non bathroom mirror in my house is dirty)

    sort mail/pay bills

pickup random clutter and clean a cupboard

    1 load laundry

    clean mudroom.

I just call it as I see it when  get up! I also never put dishes or wipe kitchen counters on the list. That's just a given and I do it as I go.

  • I clean when my discomfort with the level of mess and dirt outweighs my laziness. But I have a pretty low threshold for dirt.

I wouldn't say you're a horrible wife, but it sounds like it's time for your husband to step up and do his part.

My hubby does help me a lot, but neither of us are any good at cleaning unless we say "hey its time to clean!" We both have our bad habits lol.

  • I actually do 90% of the cleaning and I work full time and go to the gym.  For me, some things just have to wait.  I will do dishes in the morning before work and at night I choose one thing to complete.  Whether  it's a load of laundry, changing sheets, cleaning floors.  This way when the weekend comes If I want to deep clean I can, otherwise it's good to go.  I hope this helps.

  • I have the same issue. I find it's easiest to do when I start first thing in the morning, and don't get distracted by other tasks. Otherwise, it's just "oh, I'll start when I'm done with ____" or "Just one more page of this book and I'll do it".  If I just eat breakfast and put on some music, then start without doing anything else, I'll get it done.
  • Not cleaning doesn't make you a horrible wife... there are two people living in the house, you know? lol  I don't usually have a set schedule or anything, I clean as it needs it, before I am expecting company, etc.  The most scheduling I do is that Sunday is usually our down day to make sure laundry is done for the week.  After putting in clothes in the washing machine, that means that there are about 15 minutes or so before I need to move clothes to the dryer.  That's enough time to finish loading the dishwasher (we load dirty dishes as they pile up so it's ready to go when it's full instead of having to load dishes that have sat and gotten gross in the sink), vacuum if it's needed (usually is, we have light carpet and a black and tan dog that sheds), and clean mirrors, tables, etc.

I am definitely guilty of blasting some upbeat, fun music when I am home alone.  Make the time go faster (having fun listening/singing/dancing) and I go faster with fast-paced music.  It doesn't have to be "Eye of the Tiger," "Final Countdown," or anything "epic" like that... just something to get you going - Britney, GaGa, Beyonc?, whatever!

My motivation is wanting my house to be clean - I like it that way, easier to find things, etc. - and feeling like I could entertain/welcome guests at any time.
