Holidays (A Little Early)

Living in MN there are little hints everywhere that the holiday season is soon approaching; weather, store merchandise, my booked calendar, etc. For some reason I am really excited for the holidays this year when usually I dread them. I've been looking around at decorations and have been researching seasonal recipies amongst other things. One thing I really want to do is start a holiday tradition for DH and I since this is our first year of marriage. My family never really had any when I was growing up. I was thinking of getting a new Christmas ornament every year or something. Not sure...

What are your favorite holiday traditions? Do you and your hubby have a special one between the two of you?

Re: Holidays (A Little Early)

  • Weird! I'm in the Christmas spirit too right now, and I'm never in the mood before December 1st!

Christmas is pretty big in my family: authentic tree, tons of ornaments from our world travels, seeing the Christmas pantomime... we watch a Muppet Christmas Carol each year as we decorate the tree.

Phil and I always do advent calendars, but we don't decorate our place at all, since we tend to go up and spend 2 weeks at my parents' place.

  • We spend a Sunday evening together putting up our tree.  We turn on Christmas carols, light a fire, have a glass of wine and decorate.  It is really fun and pretty romantic too!
  • We do the ornament thing. We take a trip to Hallmark and pick out an ornament for that year.

We also make cookies and decorate them.

    I always decorate. :)

And we started a new tradition last year since it was our first Christmas together in our apt. We made some Christmas pasta (Yes, that is a reference from The Holiday - love that movie!), then we opened our gifts on Christmas Eve. We saved our stockings for Christmas morning.

This year we will prob only get to do the cookies & ornament thing since we are living at my parents' house right now. I can't wait until we buy a house so we can keep up these traditions and start new ones!

  • hi hi hi

i love the holidays. it makes me feel so wonderful!

with my cousins we have a secret santa gift exchange so we don't have to buy gifts for everyone.

MH and i spend TG eve at my folks then fly to vegas on TG to spend with his extended fam. we fly back on sat just to avoid the crowds. this year since i'm restricted on travelling, we'll stay in town.

we do the black friday shopping. for a couple hours and watch a show (when we're in vegas). this year we'll prolly work on putting the tree up or starting decorations.

we always watch the christmas cartoons. MH likes to call lucy and the rest of the girls on the peanuts "b*tches" hahahah yes. the name calling is an annual thing. hahah

  • I'm getting in the Christmas and Holiday season too!

We will be spending TG and Xmas in LA; one of the first times not being with family at Christmas.  Last year we didn't go home for Christmas either, because of the cost.  But we did go to Vegas and had a great time.

So random - but I had the best chicken pho I've ever had at the Vietnamese restaurant at Treasure Island.  And there are a lot of pho places here in LA, so that was weird.

This year, we will be hosting a Thanksgiving dinner with friends whose family are far away; I'm looking forward to brining my turkey and making my famous cranberry sauce!

For Christmas, this is the 3rd Christmas we are living together, but will be the first year we decorate and have a tree - can't wait!!  And I have 2 movies I like to watch in the Winter Season - White Christmas and the Sound of Music.

And the knottie/nestie exchange has become a great tradition too!  My first year we did an ornament exchange, I think that person is still here on TN/TB, but I'm blanking again as to who it is.

Last year I missed out, saw the post too late; and worst shame ever - I told kaesha more than 2 years ago that I would send her an ornament because her person never sent her hers that year.  I still have the package to send her!!  I try to alleviate my guilt by - well last year, I bought more ornaments to send her, and by the time I finally send it (this year God willing!), I hope it's a bonanza of ornaments to make up for my flakiness.  The best was getting some great ones right after Christmas at really reduced prices.  When I sent it, maybe kaesha will PIP them, but she should PIP them 2 1/2 years later  ; )

Btw, future gift-exchange person, don't worry, this won't happen to you, I promise!  I had a hard time with kaesha's because I didn't have a deadline.

  • LOL Jen! Let the guilt go!

  • I'm totally in Christmas mode!  Did a little shopping this weekend, and bought all my wrapping paper, ribbons, and such.

MH and I drive about an hour away every year to this awesome tree farm to cut down our tree ourselves, then decorate it with music playing and apple cider brewing.  Though for Christmas itself we are up in Wisconsin visiting my family.  My family does Christmas on Christmas Eve, then on the day itself we come back home and have a quiet night, just the two of us (three this year!).
