I just went to a FABULOUS holistic pet health seminar given by a wonderful vet and she touched on dogs coming in that had had a seizure with no previous seizure history. She said in many of the cases the only thing that had changed in the dog's life was some sort of strong chemical being introduced in the home. In one case a dog was living in a camper for a month (while out hunting) and was around a concentrated amount of Febreze air spray in the air. I wanted to page you to tell you about this just in case there was something in your household that had changed that might have bothered your dog. It's worth thinking about!
If you want to check out her website or even give them a call (it's a small practice so you leave a message and they try to call back in a day or two) here is her website. She was amazing.

After listening to the talk today it makes me realize how many toxic poisons we use in our house on a daily basis. They are harmful to me AND my boys. I am going to do a complete overhaul with our cleaning products and start from scratch. I'm also going to look into using some essential oils in treating Boston's arthritis.
Re: ***janells nest***
I don't have any other plans to attend anything else but I am on the e-mailing list of the vet who talked today and she sends out tons of info. I love my boys and want to do as much as I can to keep them healthy. For example I would have never stopped to think that Glade plug ins are terrible for dogs. She listed off so many examples of pets that got better right away after certain products were eliminated from the home. Fragrant dryer sheets were another one.
She has found a LOT of success using medical-grade essential oils but cautions against using certain brands. She only recommends one brand as there can be harm done if they are used improperly or a "bad brand" is used. If you're interested at all in learning about it I would definitely check out her website above. I want to try some copaiba oil for Boston's hips.
She also made a very interesting point that she would never put anything on her skin that should would hesitate ingesting. Our skin absorbs what we put on it and it goes throughout our body. She uses coconut oil as a lotion for example. So many new things to think about!
It was tremendously informative and interesting. The seminar went an hour over and I could have stayed for more. I loved it! I'm even considering driving an hour to take my boys to see her for a holistic consultation. Two thumbs up!
Oooh, thanks for the rec. I will definitely check it out!!
my read shelf:
Awesome!! Thanks for the rec!! I love the vet who led the seminar but an hour each way is a lot of time to commit!
Ditto this recommendation, Kiz. They're like the Dr. Carlson for pets. Seriously. I thought I told you about the amazing turnaround my dog made since I started going there, but maybe not? She could barely walk a block because her arthritis was so bad. She's been on home cooked food and supplements recommended by Lake Harriet for maybe 3-4 months and the difference is incredible. We've walked 3+ miles on rocky terrain, uphills, etc. and she still has energy to jump in the truck when we're done. Her legs don't give out in the mornings and she actually runs up the stairs instead of me having to carry her. People are shocked when they find out that she's 13 and still hiking with us. Other benefits...she doesn't shed nearly as much, a nail condition she has is improving and her fatty lumps are getting smaller. I was feeding her Canidae before, so it's not like I was feeding her a crap food.
Oh yeah, the green living board is a great resource for safe cleaning alternatives. Super, super helpful ladies and a great resource.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
You could have stopped right at the bold and I'd be convinced!!! :-) I'm definitely going to call them!!
Hey...sorry for being so late to chime in, its been a crazy weekend with the funeral and such the only chance I got to check the nest was last night from my phone. Thanks so much for the information I'll check into that later today!!
Better late than never! :-)
