F/U Ring Debacle

I posted in the one thread about my best friend's wedding ring debacle on Saturday ... we went to pick it up at the jeweler before her ceremony (because they couldn't finish it on time).... first they said they lost her ring. THEN the truth came out that when they sized it, all of the diamonds fell out and it was destroyed.

They didn't make an attempt to fix it or try to call my girlfriend. This was 3 hours before her ceremony! They offered no apology, no refund, nothing. They agreed to give her a cheapo band to use for the day, but she had to return it yesterday. AND we had to wait for it even longer because they didn't carry her size.

She was an absolute mess. There was a herd of angry bridesmaids too, I can tell you that. Thankfully, we got her a little liquid courage at the venue and all was well. She knew the ring wasn't the most important thing about the wedding day. However, I'm sure she and her new husband will be giving that jeweler he11 today :-)

Re: F/U Ring Debacle

  • I'd be totally pissed.  I'd also get my money back.  There would be no way in hell I'd walk out of that store without either my ring or my money.  Was it a chain jeweler or just some little jewelry store?

local jeweler. They told her since she didn't buy the ring from them, they wouldn't do anything.

  • BULLSH!T!!!!  I'd raise hell.  Make sure you blast them and give them horrible reviews on any website you can find.  Is that something you can report to the BBB?  (I know nothing about the BBB, so that may sound dumb).

  • ohhhh yes, we've already complained with everyone we can from that business. What sucks is that they custom made my engagement ring and wedding band... I've never had any issues with them until now. I'll make sure she looks into the BBB because this was soooo unnecessary.

What makes me even more mad is that on Friday they told her she should get it in the morning because they were going to clean it and shine it up in the morning so it looked perfect. Bullsh!t.

  • totally agree with stu on this one, how dare they claim to have lost it and then not even call her when they know its for her damn wedding! they put it off until her damn wedding day, there is absolutely no excuse for that!!!  I would demand every penny back and they should be paying for a replacement.  and since all the diamonds fell out, where the hell are they?! Did they even try and give them back if they weren't ruined?  I feel so outraged for your poor friend!!!  Def keep us posted on this debacle!

  • Oh my good God.  They wouldn't even be able to process the shiit storm that I would conjure up for their business if that happened to me.  I am talking full on warfare.

I would make sure to post the entire story about how awful they were on local message boards, facebook, twitter, free local newspapers...I would be so hell bent on that I would honestly think about paying for an ad in a local newspaper to let everybody know about it.

And I would tell the story to anybody who listened.  I would copy the owner of the store on every single thing that I wrote, and go into full on campaign mode against them

That is a BIG DEAL to me.  To not only have my ring ruined, but the fact that they did NOTHING to let her know, and let her show up mere hours before her wedding, to deal with that stress just before she had to walk down the aisle....ugh.  AND it was important to me that I was wearing the ring that our priest blessed, and that I will wear until I die...if I didn't have that, I would be devestated.

I'm glad that she didn't let it ruin her day, but it seriously would have put a HUGE damper on mine.

    Warfare.  I'm telling you.

  • I'd go on the knot on your local board and let girls there know what happened.

This is the shadiest thing I've ever heard.  How does she know that they didn't sell or give her ring to someone else??

yep. idk if they were waiting for her to return the substitute band or what. as soon as I hear more, I'll post!

  • Oh yeah, that's probably it then.  I forgot about the substitute band.  But I'd let her know not to walk out of that store emptyhanded.  I'd be on the phone with the cops (AKA, your hubby!!!) in a heartbeat.

  • OMG I would be throwing the biggest fit EVER and that's not like me at all. What if they did give her ring to someone else? I'm like pp, I wouldn't leave that store without the money for a replacement or another ring.

Agree. Jehawley suggested some excellent and practical tactics!

If they don't cough up another, comparable ring or the money to replace the one she handed over to them in good faith, she had definitely better contact the BBB.

  • Wow, that is crazy! I was pissed off when someone a family friend knows screwed up sizing DH's ring (for free). I could live w/o my actual ring for the day of, but the fact that they waited until the last second and won't do anything about it would make my head explode! If they're actual goldsmiths they should at least be able to forge something new out of the old one, or get the same or a comparable band and set the stones. Jeez.
  • I don't think I even told you ladies what happened with our rings the day before the wedding. This is going to be kinda long...

I took my wedding band and Kevin's wedding band into my jeweler to get them engraved and mine re-sized.  (Pretty much any jewelry owned by my parents, my bro and SIL and me and Kev has come from this jeweler or Tiffany's)

I took our rings in TWO WEEKS before the wedding, knowing that it usually takes them a few days.  The rings were supposed to be ready on Tuesday, May 4 (4 days before the wedding).  I got a phone call saying that they weren't completed yet but that they would be ready by Thursday.  I told them that that was fine because I wasn't going to pick them up until early Friday so that I could also get my ERing polished up.  Jeweler said no problem.  That they had already sized my ring, they just needed to send them out for engraving.

On Friday, I sent Kevin to pick them up because I was finishing up rehearsal/wedding stuff and didn't really have time to get over there.  It's about 12 noon at this point and our rehearsal is at 6pm.  I get a call from Kevin saying that the rings aren't at the jeweler, they are still at the engraver's. WTF.  I explain to him that we don't have time to wait around.  That I was promised these rings four days ago and let them off the hook in the first place for not having them done.  So I made him go back inside take care of it.

He calls me back about 5 minutes later and tells me that the engraver's don't deliver back to the jewelers until 3pm and that when it does get there, they still have to size my ring. And that he is going to wait until they get there.  Umm excuse me what?  NO.  (At this time, Kevin was also supposed to be getting me food for lunch, I had not eaten all day and was dying of hunger - so I was even more cranky)

I told him that he needed to walk his a$$ back inside and let me talk to Sherry (she's the only one we deal with there).  He went in and handed her the phone and I effing lost it.  I told Sherry that I understand that she had nothing to do with it (she had been on vacation until the day this all happened) but that she needed to make it right.  That I was getting married in a day and that I had way more important things to stress over than my ring that should have been done 4 days ago!

I was mostly furious that the jeweler had flat out lied to me.  He told me that the sizing was already done and now I'm finding out that my ring wasn't even sized yet.  Now Sherry and I are both in tears and I am absolutely LIVID and yelling into the phone.  I told her that they needed to figure something out.  That I needed my fiance at home helping me get things done, not waiting around for THEIR mistake.  I told her that they needed to SEND someone to get my rings and I mean NOW.

After I got off the phone with her, my mom called and I told her what was going on.  She also called Sherry and laid into her.  (Which kind of pissed me off because I had already handled it. Sherry already had someone on the road to get my rings)  My mom called me back and was all "I've taken care of it, they're getting your rings" and I was like YEAH, I KNOW!!! Because I'M the one that took care of it!

So eventually they returned with my rings and sized my ring.  Kevin was out the door and one his way home at 2:30.  TWO AND A HALF HOURS LATER!!! For something that should have taken 1 hour tops (including drive time).  I got a call from Sherry before I even got one from Kevin telling me that he had the rings and was on his way.

I felt kinda bad about yelling at her but she's the only one I wanted to talk to and I needed to know WHO dropped the ball.  My mom had flowers delivered to her the next day.

OH... and I told them that we might need to go back and re-size Kev's ring so they would engrave it on the top part, not the palm part.  Well they engraved it there anyways and I had to take it back to get it "un-engraved", resized and re-engraved.  Annoying.

So needless to say, if I was in your friend's position... I wouldn't have been leaving there without cash or a new ring.  I don't understand why they waiting until literally HOURS before your friend's wedding!  And the fact that they lied to try and cover their a$$es... I would have gone ballistic!  I hope that they do something to repair the situation that they have gotten themselves into.  If they are a custom jeweler (as I'm assuming they are since they did your rings) there is no reason that they shouldn't be able to re-set her diamonds.  AND DO IT FOR FREE!!!! They're just lying sacks of $hit!

  • Geeze Jenny! That's crazy!!!! I can't believe they did that to you!!!! Update- apparently they're sizing her husbands ring for free and they're going to try to fix hers, but they lost diamonds so they have to order more. Idiots.

Super Angry Are you KIDDING?! That is horrible! I hope it wasn't a family heirloom or something.

  • SERIOUSLY!?!?!?! They LOST diamonds?!!?!?  Do they resize their bands over a sewer grate????

I mean... you can't get down on the floor and FIND them!?!? WTF.

  • WHOA!!!  That's insane.  I would have been so pissed off and upset if that happened to me.  Like J, I would not have been ok with using a substitue band for the ceremony, I would have wanted it to be my actual band.  I would have been a huge mess.  And how in world did they lose diamonds?  They are idiots!  I am absolutely furious for your friend and I really hope everything works out in the end.
