Front Door Purchase

Has anyone bought a new front door lately?

We are in the middle of looking for a new front door, and trying to get in under the line for the tax credit. We have found special order doors that are in our price range at some of the common places like Lowes, HD or Menards, but we are interested in looking at other places, but not sure where to start. We will probably be installing it ourselves so we are looking more for a retailer not a installer.

Any suggestions?

Re: Front Door Purchase

  • I recommend NOT going to Lampert.  We had them install all new windows and were so happy that we had them do our doors, too.  Biggest mistake ever.  I think it's partly due to the door quality (Larson) and the crappy installation.  We had to call them out 4 times within the first couple months until we gave up.  We've had the doors for 2 years and we'll probably have to replace the main door soon.  To give you a comparison, my parents replaced their main door with Pella at the same time and theirs is like new.

  • We use a lot of ThermaTru doors at my office.  We usually order them from Scherer Brothers Lumber.

We just purchased new doors this weekend because our siding is getting replaced due to hail damage so we're doing it ahead of that.  We got our doors at Lowes and at Home Depot so I'm not sure I'm much help.  I did find that Lowes had a broader selection of in-stock stuff and they were in better shape than the ones at HD.  We hit up the building material outlet Saturday a.m. and it was clear that lots of folks had been looking at doors because it was pretty picked over for the size we needed but that might be a good option too.   You pay the sticker price plus 12%.

Do ask if they qualify for the energy tax credit though because not all the doors will make the cut.  Basically, the less glass that is in it, the better! Our new full glass door doesn't qualify but our half glass door does.

  • Thank you for all the input.

We have looked at Thermatru and H has mentioned Scherer, so I guess that will definitely be on our list.

We will have to check out the building Material Outlet also, We pretty much know what we are looking for, it is kind of a price and delivery thing now.
