What are your fav holiday foods?

H and I decided to host Christmas dinner this year for the first time.  We're deciding on a menu and will most likely make turkey or chicken for the protein, garlic mashed potatoes, and pumpkin cheesecake for dessert.   I also found this yummy drink on Martha Stewart's website:

What are your favorite holiday recipes?

Re: What are your fav holiday foods?

  • Sorry- very Minnesotan here and embarrased to admit it- Green Bean Hotdish.  It is one of those things that I can go all year without eating, but get to me a holiday dinner and I have to eat it!

  • for Thanksgiving- my dad's honey brined turkey on the grill.  So amazing.  I also am in loooooooooove with the Cook's Illustrated recipe for Green Bean Casserole. No cream of mushroom soup from a can and it is flavorful and really really really good.  I also adore my quasi-aunt's sweet potato souffle.  It uses cream cheese in it and is good enough for dessert.  Ok, now I'm hungry for Thanksgiving.

For Christmas - we mix it up and its never the same.  I do love the Sachertorte cookies my mom made when I was growing up though.  They were a Pillsbury Bake-off recipe. yummy. I'm trying to talk my folks into Christmas Ham this year.  We've got a small crew though so I don't know if it'll fly.  Dr. sister is working Christmas day at Children's so we'll probably be paying a visit to some sick kiddos and help brighten their days a little.  Baby sis is visiting the ILs this year.

  • My favorites are traditional Scandinavian foods that I don't have the opportunity to eat throughout the year (lefse, my aunt's fruit soup, rommegrot etc.)

Other than those I love green bean casserole, cranberry relish, sweet potato anything (usually with marshmallows on top), homemade bread/rolls, stuffing...

    Now I'm hungry, thanks! :-)

  • Definitely my grandma's famous sauerkraut meatballs...I've also got to have smoked salmon, clam chowder, and cinnamon applesauce jello.

Rommegrot? A favorite? You are a better Scandinavian than me. Stick out tongue I'm a big fan of most traditional Scandinavian foods (I even like lutefisk), but I can not handle rommegrot.

I love mashed potatoes and any kind of sweet potatoes. I especially love sweet potato casserole similar to this

  • Lefse, homemade cranberry sauce, homemade stuffing. My mom's side of the family always does soup for an appetizer/ 1st course (wild rice, butternut squash, etc). This isn't really specifically a holiday food, but I think roasted vegetables (squash, zucchini, asparagus, or green beans) would be fabulous with the menu you already have planned.
  • Lefse and Oyster Stew! Yum yum!!!

I guess I wouldn't necessarily call it a favorite.  And I can only handle a few bites with LOTS of cinnamon & sugar :-)

I think lefse would be my absolute fav if I have to pick just one :-)

  • At Thanksgiving, I have to have turkey(brined), gravy, mashed potatoes (and they have to be plain. I love garlic mashed potatoes, but I hate them with gravy), and lefse with butter & brown sugar.

     That's it.

We have sweet potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, rommegrot, sweet soup, pumpkin pie... but I hate them all.
