Annoyed at Ebay

This is a mini-rant.

I put a bid on a pair of jeans two days ago, when there was less than a day left.  I generally only bid on things with less than a day to go.  Anywho, I checked on it this morning to see if I had won, and all of the sudden there's still a day left.  So the seller added more than a day.  I just checked a bit ago, and the seller has added at least 8 hours again.

This kind of ticks me off.  I'm the only bid so far, and I feel like it's not fair for the bidder to just keep drawing out the bidding, waiting for someone else to pay more.  I'm committed to pay for the item if I win, so it's inconvenient to just have that 'out there' as something I may or not have to pay for.  If they do it again, I may contact them or Ebay and tell them that I think it's pretty crappy to make me commit to pay for something, but then they can just keep extending the time like that.  That money is in limbo, and even though it's not a lot, it's annoying.

Am I being unreasonable?

  • Uhhh NO!  I didn't even know they could do that!

  • Wow, what an annoying seller!  I never experienced anything like that on Ebay, is that allowed?
  • I don't know if it's allowed, I'm going to check out the rules.  I've never had it happen to me before.  It seems pretty crummy, though, and I feel like I have a case to get out of my commitment to buy.

  • I can't bid on ANYTHING!   I need the "Buy it Now".  Nothing is worse than getting sniped at the LAST POSSIBLE SECOND! Ugh!

  • That is not fair at all!  Hopefully you get it figured out!

  • I didn't know they could do that!  That stinks.  I also usually only bid in the last day or so.

I'm excited about my latest eBay purchase - just won (a few minutes ago!) an awesome purple Marc by Marc Jacobs Hillier Hobo.  Can't wait for it to get here!

  • Dude, that's really lame.  I would contact the seller and let them know if they extend it again you want to withdraw your bid.  Did you find anything in the rules about it?  I could have sworn that once there was a bid on anything, you weren't allowed to change the end of the auction anymore.

  • I looked in the rules for sellers and couldn't find anything, though I still think it's really crappy and probably isn't allowed or is frowned upon.  I got outbid at the last second, same thing that has happened to me for the last three things I've bid on.

But that's ok, that's why I put in a max bid.  I don't want to pay more than that, so if someone outbids me that's just how it is.  Annoying in this case, but I probably would have gotten outbid if it hadn't been extended.

I thought about contacting the seller but I don't know if it's worth it.

  • DH and I are powersellers on eBay and I'm pretty sure you cannot extend your auctions.  Are you sure you didn't mix up the end time?

I'm 100% positive.  I know that all of the auctions had less than a day left when I bid, and all of the sudden one went to one day and a few hours, more than 8 hours after I bid.  I didn't think it was possible, I really don't know how it happened.

  • hhhmmm..that sounds awfully shady.

I probably would have written a semi-nasty email to the seller.

  • I didn't even know that was permissable. I'd contact ebay and the seller.
