Holiday decor--for those who decorate for Christmas

I really would like to go all out for Christmas. I am going to get everything out this week an look through it and start thinking about tree placement and things that I'll need to get ready to decorate for Christmas. I'd love an elaborate garland for my mantle and for my tree to be a little more decked out than in the past. How do you decide what goes where and what you'll need? Do you have that decorators touch or do you hire someone to come tweak everything a little?

Re: Holiday decor--for those who decorate for Christmas

  • You have been to my house to see the decor first hand.  I have nothing close to the "touch" but I think it looks ok and it makes me happy.  With the dogs, smaller end house, and a husband who views decor as "clutter" I think I have done fairly well.  If I could afford for someone to come in and take care of everything I would in a heartbeat!

I always buy way more than I need and end up returning half of it.  I can visualize what it is going to look like but I always have a hard time staying within the confines of the space.

Our ornaments on the main tree are not specific to our decor look but it always amazes me how many ornaments we actually have.  If I could add some ribbon or bows I would but I honestly think I would need a bigger tree.

BTW, I think I am really going to miss the gingerbread house night...  Sad

ETA:  Outside decor, DH takes care of all of it.  Most of my lights are already in place except for the walkway.  They aren't turned on and won't be until after T-day but last year I was the last person to have lights up outside and even then DH did it half-assed.

  • Before we moved here we decorated ourselves. We had an apartment and I loved to decorate with Italian influences. This year we are hiring someone, dh doesn't have time to hang lights outside the house and I am not in mood to fall off roof. I have a few ornaments from various European countries I am pulling out this year so excitement is an understatement.

  • I have a pretty unique style. Some of my items are handed down from other people in my family (i.e. Grandma), and some are things I've just collected through the years. I'm looking forward to putting my tree up this year though--last year Christmas was kind of halfassed since we had moved only four days prior and then were pretty much completely snowed in for the holidays.

DH is going to do a lot of the outdoor decor. Unfortunately for me, he's a huge fan of the icicle lights (which I, to put it mildly, am NOT a fan), so I gave in and agreed he can do those since they're not permanent and I generally veto about 80-90% of his decorating ideas already. So for temporary things, I will cave.

  • I decorate inside myself and outside I direct.  We moved up in house size this year so we will be needing lots more outside lights, but I have to see how far we can go with what we have.  We will do that this Thursday (I always put my lights up on Veterans Day)

Inside, I have so many trees that people think I am crazy (7 at least) and I want a real tree.  All of my trees will be themed, but will go together, except for Campbell's tree (that's hers to decorate).  I know what I need to buy, but I also need to see how the things I already own will work.  I love making my own garlands and wreathes so I would say start at Basket Market.  They have a small selection than Hobby Lobby, but it is cheaper.  I know they have everything I need for the best looking mantlepiece.  A florist would be able to come in and decorate for you.  They would use what you have and add to it.  I am not sure what that would run though.

  • I decorate the inside more than the outside. I try to keep it pretty simple so it doesn't look like Christmas threw up in my house. My showiest place is the mantle. I have a beautiful garland that I got from Hobby Lobby. Then I have a Willowtree Nativity scene and the stockings hanging. Last year I bought a beautiful ribbon topper for our tree. It has about 4 tails that I wrap around the tree. It makes a really pretty effect with the lights twinkling behind it.

For outside we don't have lights on the house (although I'm trying to warm DH to the idea) but I do have a wreath for the door. I also have small yard stakes. They are basically sparkly candy canes and stars (I believe, I can't really remember since I bought them on sale last year).

If you are looking to deck out your tree and mantle I would look at Hobby Lobby and Target. I know right now some of the Christmas stuff at Hobby Lobby is on sale.

I'll miss that too! Sad  Good times...

I have no decorating skills whatsoever, so we keep it pretty basic here.  I'll put the tree up of course, but our ornaments aren't anything special.  I figure each year we'll get a few special/meaningful ornaments to add in.

I'm not good at visualizing, so I'm always afraid to buy decorations and then not have any idea how/where to put them.  We didn't put lights up outside last year, but I'll try to convince DH this year (I'll probably fail though b/c, since we live on a dead end, he doesn't see the point b/c "no one sees them" boo).  Our tree makes me happy, so I guess it's all good Smile

As a sidenote, my aunt and uncle get crazy with decorations!!  My uncle starts decorating the outside Thanksgiving weekend and it's freaking awesome.  I'll have to post pics this year if we go to their house.
  • I saw a Social Living deal last week that was a Christmas decoration inspiration tour in Edmond.  I missed the deal, but I think I'm going to have to buy the tickets full price and go anyway.  Some women's group in Edmond is decking out 8 homes in Edmond and take you on a tour and provide lunch.  I think it would be a fun thing to do with my mom and give us some new decorating inspiration.  You should check it out!

BTW, I get a lot of my Christmas decoration at Hobby Lobby and Garden Ridge.  I also like to make my own garland and wreaths. I can make them look a lot fancier than the pre-made ones and for a lot cheaper.

  • I like a shabby chic/cottagey feel and I think that's kinda how my decor comes out. I get a lot of stuff at TJ Maxx. If you look at our house pics on FB it's decorated for Christmas when I took them.

I think we should just make that an annual tradition!

I had plans to but I fear exhaustion is going to set in soon so I bailed this year.  Next year... It's on!

  • We have a couple of things, but for the most part, I'm not a Christmas decorator. I think it's because I go visit my parents for 2-3 weeks around Christmas and my mom has always decorated like crazy, so I help her but am not here to enjoy my own decorations.

Eventually we need to get a  tree,  though. DH and I have always had a tradition since the year we got engaged that we bought each other a single ornament as our only Christmas gift to one another that symbolizes something we did together that year. Neither one of us really enjoy giving/getting gifts (weird, I know!) But, it's fun to look back and trace our history through our ornaments.

I'll address the Scrooge thing on UO Thursday :)

This is an awesome tradition.  I will have to ask DH if he'd be interested in starting something like this.

  • I suck at decorating.  I see things in magazines that I love, but I can't recreate them.  One of my issues is that I always underestimate what I'll need (mainly because I'm cheap!).  For instance, if I need ribbon for my tree I will buy 3 rolls which is barely enough instead of the 5 rolls I really need for the tree to look nice.

But, I'm on a mission to do better.  I'm going to buy more ornaments for my tree this year so it will look more "put together" (and more ribbon!).  I'm also going to buy a smaller black tree and do an OSU theme decor with it, which I think will be fun for the entryway.

It's pretty fun to try to find the "perfect one." I usually end up getting in online (or, if we go on a cool vacation that year, I try to sneak off at some point to get one at a gift shop.)

I'm sure DH isn't as into it as I am,  but he appeases me without complaint, and that's all I can ask :)
