Tip MT @ Chiro?

Should you tip the massage therapist at the chiropractor?

My insurance doesn't pay for massage (but I know my old insurance did pay for massage in a "medical" environment, like chiropractic), but the rate that the MT charges at the chiro is way less than what you'd pay in a spa.  I'm unsure what the ettiquite is in this situation.  It seems like it's more of a medical treatment than it is a relaxing, spa experience, but I don't want to be the jerk who doesn't tip if I should be.

Thoughts?

Re: Tip MT @ Chiro?

  • It would never occur to me to tip.
  • When I got massages at Northwestern Health Sciences University they didn't allow tips to be given.  Maybe ask them if it is even allowed?  Granted NHSU is a school so that might be different than a traditional chiro clinic setting?

If tips are allowed I would tip the standard amount.

  • It's never occurred to me to tip my massage therapist, because the massage is a medical service offered at my chiropractic office.  I've never heard any other patients (including some friends of mine) mention tipping there either.

I DO always tip when I get a massage at a salon, but it never even crossed my mind to tip at the chiro office.  It would be like tipping the dentist...

    Interesting question...

ETA: edited for clarity.  When I responded earlier, I was fresh off a big presentation and my brain was totally not functioning.

  • I had the same dilema last month. Basically the advice I got was to ask the person at the front desk if tips were accepted, and when I asked I was told they were accepted, but I got the feeling they really weren't expected.

  • If massage is in medical setting I do not tip.  I am a healthcare professional and we do not get tips nor are they allowed.  That would be like tipping the nurse at the MD office, physical therapist etc..  Now when I go to a spa or to Massage Envy I tip.

    This was my reasoning.
