How much to pay a babysitter?
My friend's daughter is going to babysit for us next weekend for 4 hours. She's 12 and just getting some experience under her belt, so mom will be with her the whole time. How much should I pay her?
Re: How much to pay a babysitter?
The last time I babysat was a good 10 years ago [maybe more than that]...maybe $4/hour? $5/hour? I'd probably give her $20, but it depends on what the going rate is around there.
Is that too much?
ha around here it would probably be upwards of 10-15/hour for a 12 yr old.
at least that is what my sister told me.
Boston vs. Kansas may be different.
I'd do Min Wage-ish $7.00 per hour.
Holy crow, I think I should take up babysitting! When I babysat (pre-1988, mind you) I was making $1.50 - 2.50/hour and the $2.50 was from my parents' friends who REALLY liked me. Minimum wage at the time was between $3.35/hour & $4.50/hour. Babysitting was ALWAYS less than minimum wage, because we got paid cash & didn't declare it (I can say that since I'm fairly certain the statute of limitations is up, ha).
I see legal secretary jobs now, in NY & NJ, with all sorts of requirements - typing, offic, excel - being advertised at $10-14/hour. So these people are making the same as babysitters?! What's the point in getting an education?
Sorry, I'm a little stressed. I had a job interview this morning, and I'm going back in 45 minutes to meet with the other partner. It's a firm that's nearby, but it's crap money (just over half of what I should be making if the economy and my life were on the right path) and requires half a day on Saturdays, which sucks. And cuts into face painting. If I divided out the /hour rate, I'd probably cry over it myself. But still, it's a paycheck. If I even get the damned job.
Sigh.

Yes, I always made far less than minimum wage while babysitting. I kept two kids 40 hrs/week one summer and made $50/week. That was 1999.

I only charged $2/hr + .50 for each addt'l kid. I seem to remember getting that rate from either Babysitter's Club books or my babysitting class. Either way, it was half minimum wage and not nearly enough for most of the little nasties I babysat. My sister and I watched my parents' friends' kids every Wednesday for 3 hours for a good 3 months or so and each got $10 and a body splash from Wal-Mart at Christmas.
I think $20 is more than enough for 4 hours, especially with her mom around.
Seriously, I'd consider that job training, which is always lower pay than the real thing.

This is how I'm feeling, and when I asked her mom she said Hannah gets like $5-10 for a couple hours from other friends. I feel like $20 is plenty going by that.
