How much do you tip your hairdresser?

Hopefully I'll get some answers before I go tomorrow.

Getting my hair cut and coloured tomorrow. I usually do these separately this is why I'm asking. It'll be about $100 for everything. I would normally tip about $5 for each person (I was raised that it is a token of appreciation not a percentage). Do you think it's fair to give $10 for cut and colour from one person? Too much, too little? I did this last time (I also got $10 off for my first visit) and she seemed kind of surprised or maybe just thankful. Wwyd?

Re: How much do you tip your hairdresser?

  • I usually tip 20%.  If several people do the services, I tip 20% based on the price of each service (eyebrows $15 - tip $3, pedicure $35 - tip $7, etc).  I've always tipped service industry people 20% (unless horrible service), but that's just because that's what's expected when I was waiting tables, and I just carried it over.  I could be wrong, but that's what I do!

  • I usually tip 20% also.

  • I tip 20% in restaurants, where wait staff is expected to tip out, and they make like...$2 an hour in wages because they're expected to live off their tips. But in a salon, I totally agree with you about the token of appreciation thing. So $5-10 depending on what I'm getting done. Waxing gets a bigger tip from me, a simple hair cut gets less. So for cut and color I'd probably give ten.

I worked in the beauty industry for four years, and I can guarantee that basically no one tipped as a percentage there. It was always a 5, 10, or 20 that I got pretty much. I got a $50 tip a couple times and almost jizzed myself!

  • I tip 20% every time. My hairdresser does a great job and I like to show my appreciation.

  • Yeah I tip at least 20%. The two people you don't want to mess with are those who make your food and do your hair.
  • I usually tip over 20% at restaurants.  I've been known to give 50% for really good service.  I usually tip about 20% to my stylist.  I've been going to her forever and she's SOOOO sweet and awesome and is the only person who can do my hair without using a straightener

  • i don't think I'm much help... my hair stylist is my best friend... I tip her with love and appreciation and free babysitting lol
  • I tip my stylist 20%.

  • I never know what to tip either.  Usually I'll tip more if services are pretty inexpensive and tip less if they're more expensive.  I don't know if that really makes sense, but that's what I do.

  • I didn't get to see all of your input until I got home from my appt. DH brought up the same point as jehawley that they don't make next to nothing like servers. I gave her what I planned, and that's what I was comfortable with. I don't even make $10/hr right now!
