Weird question...humidifier recs?

I'm wanting to get a humidifier for our room for the evenings since it's always so dang dry.  What's the difference between the warm and cool mist?  Does it really matter?

Which one do you use and why?

  • Not a weird question...it was asked just a little while ago:

I did research on humidifiers a while back when I lived on the mainland, but never ended up getting one.  I can't recall what I learned in my research, but if you google, there are tons of information on it.  Here's a short pro/con list I found:

WARM OR COOL MIST? WHICH HUMIDIFIER IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Cool Mist Humidifier PlusesCool mist humidifiers are easier to clean (all water tanks should be rinsed every few days)Cool Mist humidifiers will cover a larger areaCool Mist Humidifier MinusesSlightly noisier than warm mist units due to the fan noiseYou can hear the water gurgle when it flows out of the tankCool mist can feel slightly cool and clammy at certain room temperaturesWarm Mist Humidifier PlusesThey are quieter than cool mist unitsWarm mist humidifiers feel the most comfortable especially in Northern wintersWarm Mist Humidifier MinusesWarm mist humidifiers in general require frequent cleaning, and are harder to clean than cool mist humidifiers .An exception to that rule is Air-O-Swiss a dual mode machine.Warm mist machines cover a smaller area than cool mist humidifiers, often no more than one decent sized bedroomThe boiling sound can often be heard on high speed but it is not a noise issue for most peopleThe gurgling sound can be heard when it flows out of the tank humidifier

  • WOW, awesome!  Thanks for all that information!  I thought it was discussed before but couldn't remember how long ago and couldn't find the thread, although it was staring me right in the face! ;)

Thank you again so much!! :)

  • Yeah, it was me that posted that recently!

We ended up getting one from BBB (using the 20% coupon helps!). Its a cool mist humidifier, which I figured would be better b/c the warm ones provide the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. Although, I can see how a warm humidifier can be helpful, too. The one we got was one made for small to medium sized room from Sharper Image. It has a little capsule that you can put in there to help de-mineralize the water. But doubt that we'll need it in the future since our water source isn't that bad.

    HTH!
