Preface - This is not an "end of the world" kind of event, but we're really upset about this. Wanting some opinions, and wondering what we can/should do (if anything). Kind long...
We had a certain satelite company for years. We canceled our service in September, due to financial reasons (and fully intended on resuming service in the future). A month later (1.5 weeks ago), we received a bill with a due date of 11/11. Confused, we called, and talked to the rudest customer service rep ever. In the end, we found out, it was supposedly for a PPV we had ordered 2.5 years ago, and were never billed for. Even though this made no sense to us, we agreed to make payment on our next payday (which is today, well before the due date!). 2 days later we get a THREATING phone call from another rude rep...HELLO, the bill is not due yet!
I checked our bank account this morning, only to find out that they had taken money out of our account for the bill. I was never enrolled in auto payments or anything like that, we NEVER authorized this payment and the bill is not even due yet. We called to find out how this could happen, to be met with YET AGAIN, a very rude rep. She claims we signed a "credit card authorization" when starting service with them. Um, yeah, as a place holder in case there was ever unreturned/damaged equipment, not so you could STEAL money from us.
We're so upset by this, but have no idea what we can do. In the end, when DH talked to them, she literally said "there's nothing I can do, it's our money now". I mean, we're not talking millions of dollars here, and we fully intended on paying the bill today anyway, so I know it's not a HUGE deal, but it's still really upsetting and just seems wrong...
Re: You Ladies are Smart...
my read shelf:
Hmm...this sounds like Direct TV.
We had our satellite set up last January. We have a tree in front of our balcony and come spring- tree blooms, blocks signal, we lose service. I was told by 3 people (from the company) that this was Direct TVs mistake and I wouldn't be charged the late fee. Well, I got charged $420+ for the late fee- onto my credit card (we were on autopay which was not a good idea with a shady company).
I fought with them from May-July. My first call I was told "there is nothing we can do" about 10 times. Hung up, called again, was told "oh yeah no problem we will send a rebate check and it'll take 6-8 weeks." I thought well that sucks but okay at least they're doing something about it. 8 weeks went by...no check. Now I start emailing (so I have documentation of them saying yes, we'll send you the check...etc). At this point I also called USAA, and they said as long as I had proof that they said they indeed owed me the money back, and proof on the CC statement that they took out that money, that I could file a dispute. The week I mailed all the documents, Direct TV paid the money back.
Moral of the story is: document, document document. Call and HOUND them. At one point I called/emailed every single day. Call your CC company/bank and see what they can do!
I would contact your bank as they might have advice.
But I agree to ask to speak to a manager.
Did the money come from a credit card, or out of your checking account? You've got some more options with a credit card - you can dispute and stop payment. Put it in writing to your CC company. If it's out of your checking account, it's tougher, but you might have some options. I'd try to stop payment, and do it on YOUR terms.
File a complaint with the BBB - this is unacceptable customer service.
I'd check into whatever they claimed you were never billed for too - that sounds kind of shady. Can you check your prior bills? 2.5 years later and they're billing you? Sounds weird...
Sounds far-fetched, but wouldn't hurt to try - Money magazine has a feature where you can write in with problems like this, and they'll contact the company on your behind and get your money back, if you've been unfairly treated or haven't been able to resolve an issue. There might be other avenues like this you can try too.
No consumer should feel threatened like this. Check out this website to see if there are resources here that can help you. GL!

Gaaaaah. I hate any and all cable/internet companies. They all pull the SHADIEST business stunts!!!
We've been happy with DirectTV so far, but we haven't tried canceling with them yet...I am not looking forward to the day we ever do...
