Organized a club/sought sponsors?????

Hey ladies!

I have barely been around because triathlon and our local triathlon club has consumed my entire life since last December.  We started out with a handful of people that thought it'd be fun to train together and now we're well over 100 members! YAY!

BUT...we only started off with a Pres/VP/Treasurer/Secretary and we need way more organization.  Any thoughts? I am having trouble leading meetings (I'm pres) because I don't know Roberts Rules of Order.

Also, we thought we could fundraise by getting sponsors and putting logos on their shirt, but now the treasurer thinks that we'll have to get an accountant if we do that?? Any thoughts??

Re: Organized a club/sought sponsors?????

  • I don't have any advice myself, but I bet that an established club would be more than willing to share tips and advice. I know Roch has a pretty established triathletes group - I'd contact the president and see if they'd be willing to "mentor" a startup group. Also, try posting on the H&F board here to see if a nestie's gone through something similar- good luck!

  • This is completely an unprofessional opinion/advice....

If you are starting a club and want to gain sponsors, they'll probably want to write off the money on their taxes. That means you'd need to register as a not-for-profit...

I also second contacting another triathalon group and seeing if they could lend some advice!

  • it sounds like you guys might be on your way to starting a non-profit (yay- you!)...becoming a 501(c)3 is not very hard- you need some bylaws (which you could find on line and modify them to fit your needs) and some officers (which you have)....you dont necessarily need an accountant just yet but it would help to have someone who is financially savvy helping you out (maybe you could get an accountant on board with the lure of advertising them as your sponsor...)

i agree with PP about contacting other groups- because if you all didnt want to become a non-profit and wanted to stay ad hoc- you def could by maybe charging a nominal fee (like $10/year) and this goes to a fund for tee-shirts, and end of year party, workshops...you also might be able to link up with some local businesses to do discounting on sneakers and apparel- like your members will receive 10% off- when they join...

Let me know how it goes...I also have some non-profit books I can see if i can dig some info out for you...Good Luck!

  • Thanks ladies!

We're in the process of contacting more established clubs. WHEW! Who'da thunk it'd be so hard?!!
