Where do you keep shoes?

Between DH and I, we have several pairs of shoes that get quite a bit of wear.  Our bedroom is on the 2nd floor, so we tend to leave our shoes just sit by the back door.

What do you use to keep shoes out of the way. I'm sick of tripping over them! I want something that looks nice and will keep them tidy'd up. I do daycare in our home, so I also have several kids shoes by the front door.

Thanks!

Re: Where do you keep shoes?

  • My huband and I had the same challenge -- too many shoes, not enough space.  We ended up purchasing a storage solution from ikea and have it in our garage.  Now we leave all of our shoes outside -- which helps keep our carpet clean!!

Here is what we use:  http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39867024

You can add as many shelves as you want!!

  • We have an over the door shoe rack on our coat closet by the garage. Holds a lot of our most worn shoes.

The less worn shoes are in a rack in our bedroom closet.

  • Most of our shoes are up in our closet.  We enter through the garage into the laundry room, we have 2 infants that put EVERYTHING in their mouths (including dirty shoes) so we needed them off the floor (no freestanding shoe rack, and DH hated my over-the-door rack).  Just yesterday I bought 3 of THESE and I'm going to go back and buy at least 1 more.  We have a small shelf in the laundry room and the baskets hang from it.  I plan on getting something to line the bottom with so dirt from one pair doesn't get into/onto another pair.
  • DH and I had the same problem and there is only two of us!  We have too many shoes!  We got two shoe racks to put in our laundry room closet (just off of our garage) so it is the perfect place to store our frequently used shoes.  Other shoes are on storage racks in our master closet.

  • In our TH, DH and I had 2 shelves to put shoes on when we walked in the door.  At our apt we just pile them at the door.  I always thought one of these would be nice because they have a slim profile so they don't take up a lot of room.  http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00141849
  • We have a basic shoe rack outside of our door with shoes we typically wear, and then in my closet I have this:

  • We have a small rug right inside the door that leads to the garage (we enter the house most commonly through there). That is where we keep our three most worn shoes pretty much all the time.  My other shoes are in under-box storage containers - these are like dressy pumps and then boots in summer, flip-flops in winter - or on an open bookshelf-type shelving unit.  We can't use the usual shoe storage solutions because we have such big feet that ours don't usually fit (I wear 12/13 in women's and my fianc? wears around a size 14 in men's). If you don't have the big foot size issue, I usually see the over the door shoe organizers - either that you slide a stick into the shoe or you slide the shoe into a little pocket.

At my brother and sister-in-law's house, they have a rug outside the door that leads into the house from the garage (they enter from there most too).  That way there is no dirt being tracked in because all shoes stay outside.  They used to have a white toy-box near the front door, they could sit on it to put on socks and shoes, and the shoes could be stored away out of sight.

    Hope you find a solution!
