Dr Bronner's - true or false

I'm reading their website and find it really hard to believe you can use the same soap for: body wash, heavy duty house cleaning, shampoo, laundry, and toothpaste??  For real??

I'm curious - what is so magical about this stuff?  Does it smell good?  I'm sensitive to scents.

Thanks! :-)

Re: Dr Bronner's - true or false

  • I currently only use it in hand soap, but there is an unscented variety and I prefer that one.

  • Yeah, they really do promote it for EVERYTHING! Their marketing is... interesting.

But the non-scented is good if you are sensitive. I like the citrus for the kitchen hand soap and the lavender is nice for baths. I would not recommend accidentally getting the peppermint one in your eyes, though... : ) Very unpleasant results!

  • I've been happy with it for a household cleaner, hand soap, and body wash (but in a foaming pump dispenser for hand/body soap).
  • I've used it for hand/body soap, laundry and cleaning and it works well for all.  I don't really have the desire to try as toothpaste, though.  I was curious when I first saw that and found a video on Youtube where a guy uses the peppermint as toothpaste and then freaks out over the taste and excessive foaming.  He said it was kind of like getting your mouth washed out as a kid.  Ick.

  • Honestly, most of your bathroom soaps also work as cleaning products, they just arent marketed for it. Like shampoo for example is a grease cutter, what do you have mostly on your dishes and what makes up the better part of a tub scuz ring?? Grease and oil. SO essentially you could use shampoo for those cleaning needs.

People just dont realize that you dont NEED harsh chemicals for everything. Just look outside the marketing box and figure out what about your body cleaning and what about your household cleaning is the same. Your hands, your dishes, your hair, your tub, your body, your floor and your laundry all have a mixture of dirt, oil and grease... (sometimes mold is on the non human surfaces) You are essentially cleaning the same stuff, its just the surfaces that make them different...shrug. Plus you have to step on, sit on, lounge on or wear all the rest of the stuff that you would use those harsh chemicals on... Dr. Bronners is just soap and you use soap to clean things...

You're totally right!  I think I just didn't realize all of that because of how all of these products have been marketed.  I am still skeptical about using it as toothpaste though.  :-)

Do they sell Dr Bronner's in stores or only online?  I like to smell things first before I buy them.  :-)

That is so true! I use dish soap, vinegar, water and baking soda to clean almost everything. I have some "green" dish soap in a spray bottle diluted with water and it works great. I've also done the same thing with Dr. Bronner's.

Using it for my hand soap has given me mixed results. It's hard to find the balance between too soapy and too watery. I like the idea of the foam dispenser. I'll have to try that one.

    I've found it at Target.

  • I forgot to mention that I am also sensitive to scents and the peppermint one is fine for me. I've also seen little trial sizes at Target for on the go or sampling. I think Fred Meyer (Kroger) has it as well.
  • I get it at our local crunchy store, I guess a mini version of Whole Foods.

I use it in my cleaning bottles (like an all purpose cleaner) and as body and face wash.  I prefer the baby mild (unscented) for most things, but the citrus is a nice pick me up.  My husband has been using that one as a body wash and prefers it over his manly Dove and Axe.  I have not tried it as toothpaste.

I've tried the lavender, tea tree, and peppermint and like them, just don't keep them on hand because I prefer the unscented.  After a couple weeks of using the unscented soap, my need for moisturizer was nearly eliminated.  Win.

I know some people shred the bars of Dr. Bronners, mix with washing soda, and use it as laundry detergent, but I have not done so.

  • I've also been able to find Dr. B's at Target.  For a long time, though, I didn't realize that they carried it since they stock it in a different section from the rest of the soap.  I ended up finding it by accident one day in the cosmetics section with some other EF soaps and things.

The other place I've found it is Whole Foods.

You dare to question ALL ONE OR NONE??

    ABSOLUTE CLEANLINESS IS GODLINESS!

Man... I love Dr. B's ravings.

It's soap. You can clean stuff with it. We don't need as many specialized cleaners as they market to us. I know some use the bar soap in homemade laundry detergents.

Mostly, I just bathe with it, but it does get stains out of clothes, Oh and I do wash my counters, etc with it.

I like the peppermint especially for cleaning, and LOVE the almond for bathing.

  • Thanks everyone.  I'm glad to hear it's at Target.

I think my brain is fixated on using something like 409 kitchen cleaner as toothpaste and it makes me tongue involuntarily shudder.

I will definitely go do some sniffin' and buyin' of Dr. B at Target :-)

  • I use it for toothpaste, but only when backpacking.  It works great, but isn't flavored or sweetened, so it doesn't have a toothpastey flavor.  The key is to use only 1 or 2 drops and some water; it's not bad.  More than that, though, and you'll hate it.

This. Even in our natural foods store, it's in the cosmetics section.

I can vouch for the unscented. We don't use anything scented, because our family is too sensitive.

And ditto pp that in this age of marketing, it's easy to forget how versitile SOAP is. I have long used regular dish soap for 99% of household cleaning and plain "hand" soap for much more. And while I'm sure it would work as toothpaste, I don't feel the need to go there.

I PPH our foam dispenser.  http://www.amazon.com/Cuisipro-837579-Foam-Pump/dp/B001RRG5VI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1278086537&sr=8-2

You fill the dispenser to the line on the back with Dr. B's and fill up the rest of the way with water.  Presto!  Perfect foam every time, exactly like the picture.  LOVE IT.

  • Dr. Bronner's is just soap.  It'd be like brushing your teeth with soap.  It's not so bad.  I've done it.  I grew up in a third-world country, and toothpaste isn't all that common there except in big cities.  People brush their teeth with soap, salt, or charcoal.  I don't think it's weird.
  • In my experience it seems to be true. Most people don't realise but regular toothpaste has all the nasty ingredients that regular shampoo has, including SLS.
I dunno why it's so magical but it works!
  • I think camping stores (REI, EMS, etc) usually carry it? I got a big bottle of peppermint castille soap at Trader Joe's for about $4 (half the cost of dr.b's) they used to also sell the real deal, but I don't know any more?

I brushed my teeth with too many drops of it once...about 5 years ago...I can still feel the burn. I don't think I could taste anything for days.
