Trading in the Civic

Hey girls,

So, it's about time for me to trade in my Civic of over 6 years for a roomier "mommy friendly" SUV. We don't have kids yet, but its in the cards, so I really would like to know from the moms out there what kind of vehicle you have and what you like/dislike about it.

I have been looking at some mid sized SUVs that I really like, but my main concern is having enough storage space with kiddos later on down the line.

I appreciate any recommendations you may have :)

  • If you haven't already, you should post this on the Bump board.  More people post there and most of them are moms.

  • i want the volvo xc90 (even the 60 would do).

i wouldn't turn my nose up to the bmw x5, either. ha!

otherwise, I have no good suggestions.  We're not quite in the market for a "mom mobile" yet... so I just keep my eyes peeled for pretty ones on the road and make mental notes.

  • I sold my Civic and bought a CRV.  Love it!  I think it makes a fab mommy mobile.  It's big enough to tote around 2 boys plus stuff in the back.  I also like that the passenger doors open up almost 90 degrees.

    :-)

  • I totally drive a mommy mobile....silver bullet. A 2008 Toyota Sienna minivan. I got it last year and love it. I have enough room in the back for a double stroller.  Three rows of seats are great as my carseats almost take up one row.  I can still have passengers with me like my inlaws or my mom.  The third row is a stow and go....so it folds down into the floor when i need to load somethings in pick up style!!! I love it. One of the passenger doors even opens by the touch of a button.  Totally a mom mobile....but it makes my life so much easier. When my family sees me driving they call me mother goose!~
  • I probably won't have kids for another year or two but I definitely think it's a good idea to plan for it since I will have my next car for 5-6 years, maybe even more.

I love the Volvos and Hondas are awesome too! It's good to hear the CRV is enough room, because I tend to like the mid-sized SUV's better than the larger ones.

I know I am probably planning way ahead here, but that's just how I roll ;)

  • no recs but can you get your hands on a consumer reports?  or online access through family/friends?  I'd start there.

  • Not a mom yet, but I have a CRV and I love it!  I think it is plenty roomy and plan on keeping it for awhile after we have kids.

  • I'm not a mom yet either, but I have a Subaru Outback station wagon and LOVE it. It has more cargo space than my sister's GMC Yukon.

  • I am also not a mom, but I like to be able to haul a lot of stuff in the back of my car. I have to recommend the Subaru Forester.

I have had one for 2 years and it has been really reliable, and the back can fit a ton. We have brought large pieces of furniture back from stores very easily.

It also is not as large or as tall as some midsize SUVs, which I like. I had a huge Blazer for many years, and it did not handle nearly as well as my Forester does.

  • i'm not a mom and sold my civic for a vw gti (impressively spatious for a hatchback). but i just wanted to give you the tip that you might be able to get more money for your civic if you try to sell it on craigslist. mine was a 1998 model, and we sold it for $3K, which is more than we would've gotten if we traded it in at the dealership.
  • I want the Volvo SUV next.  Your poor civic!!!  Are you going to miss it :)  Watch out world, she has a BIG car!

  • Thank you all for responding! We finally caved last night. We test drove the Toyota 4Runner and I fell in love! I have to admit I shed a tear when I let the Civic go, but I am already loving having more space and it drives so well!

  • I wish I would have seen this before we decided to trade in! Oh well, who knows, maybe I will be able to get more for my Toyota one day when it's time for another car down the line.
