Can I be whiney for a minute?

I have found another reason to be annoyed with my sister for moving to Arizona. I have no idea how Christmas is going to work this year. The tradition for the last 8 years or so has been Christmas evening we would all get together at her house. This worked out well for everyone, it gave her the morning to spend with her kids and DH and I would spend the morning with his family and the evening with mine.

Well since she doesn't have a house here now my house is pretty much the only option. My moms place is small and she smokes and my brother lives with her... and my grandma is getting too old to cook for everyone. This means that I will probably have to skip Christmas morning with the IL's so that I can get my house ready and cook for everyone.

Thanksgiving has been at her place the past couple years too and my mom asked me the other day if we can have that here too. Ugh...

Re: Can I be whiney for a minute?

  • Maybe you can do a potluck Thanksgiving/Christmas and have everyone bring a certain type of dish instead of doing all the cooking yourself.

Maybe you can do Christmas Eve with the ILs instead of Christmas morning?

Christmas eve my Grandma has everyone over to open gifts.  It's just frustrating because my house is not that big and I really don't like Christmas anyway. My parents being divorced complicates things a little bit too because there are more schedules to work with.  I am just still angry/sad that my sister moved I think.

  • I see.

We do Thanksgiving and Christmas day by ourselves usually and try and work things out with family on other weekends. We just could not make everyone happy and we got tired of the arguing. With my DH's work, he usually doesn't get Holidays off or has to work the day before or after which doesn't really allow us to travel. Our families were PISSED with out decision at first, especially my Mom who threw a fit about how they packed up 4 kids and drove 5 hrs to PA every Christmas to see both sets of Grandparents only to drive back 24 hrs later. And those trips SUCKED for us as kids, it was always snowing or there was an ice storm and 5 hrs turned into 14 hrs sometimes.

I guess I'm just saying you have to figure out what works for you and stick with that.

  • That sounds frustrating and overwhelming.  Especially with a new baby.    (((hugs)))

  • What about ordering your meal this year?  Bob evans does it and I am sure some of the local ones will too.  That way you just have to heat and serve?
  • I might try to cook in advance and freeze what I can so I just have to reheat.

  • doesnt it seem like it is always something?

If you don't want to cook and freeze, have you thought about MyMenu at the Andersons? Or what about Honey Baked?

MIL took thanksgiving from me this year. She claims she is putting her house up for sale in the spring, so this will be the last time she has it at her house. WTFE. Then she says to me yesterday, did B tell you we are having thanksgiving here this year? I replied with yes. And then she asked if that was OK. I just said yes.... I mean what was I going to say? No, Thanksgiving is my holiday.

    Sorry to hijack your post.

Aren't holidays great? Easter has always been "my" holiday. I don't really like Christmas.

I am pretty sure I am going to have to buy a big roaster too... we have small double ovens but one died and they aren't big enough for a big ham or turkey.

We usually do thanksgiving type food @ christmas too but I think maybe I will do a baked potato bar this year. I will provide the potatoes and everyone else can bring a topping. Before my aunts husband passed away we always did something different(he was a great cook)... mexican, italian, polish.

  • I think holidays are just a pain in general.  We aren't even seeing Nick's family this year for Thanksgiving.  He wants to go deer hunting so we'll be at the lake with my family the entire time.  Like that won't cause problems, it will be my fault somehow when I had nothing to do with it!!!

And for Christmas, well since his family isn't talking to me, I have no idea what they are planning so we are making plans and just not worrying about their schedule, if they fit in, great, but if not, oh well.

This was my IL's family "tradition" and we did it for 2 yrs.  On year 2 we got stuck in Cleveland Christmas Eve due to weather and I had to wake up Christmas morning in a Holiday Inn.  Never.Again.and.hell.no.with.kids.

I've put my foot down that my kids will wake up every Christmas morning in OUR household.  Period.  We still see everyone at some point during the season and it isn't our fault everyone is divorced and can't be civil in the same room/cities with each other.  TS. How is that for being a scrooge :)
