Invisalign

Does anyone have any experience with these?  I made an appointment yesterday to talk with my dentist about orthodontia and I think I'd like to try these since I'm already 4" tall and 40 years younger than a majority of the people that I interface with for work and would like for people in my industry to be able to take me seriously.

p.s. I promise this is not passive-aggressive teeth talk, it's just what I'm doing these days that doesn't include potty training or practicing letters and numbers.

Re: Invisalign

  • My sister did it with great success.  You wear the trays 23 hours a day (take out to eat.)  It's important to wear them as much as you can, you kind of have to treat them like permanent braces.  My sister went in once a month for two new trays - you switch every 2 weeks.  She said it DID hurt at times (much like my braces hurt when they adjusted a bracket.)  You couldn't tell at all when she had her trays in.  Now she wears a retainer tray at night and is very happy with her results.

  • You need braces?  I have seen pictures of you and never noticed crooked teeth.  Please submit an up close teeth picture so I may approve or deny your Invisalign request.

  • My dentist recommends these every time I go to him because of my Jewel-esque snaggle tooth.  Though I've been tempted, if I'm going to spend any money on something cosmetic, it'll be on lipo plus a tummy tuck.

    Good luck!

  • Ha!  It's mostly my bottom teeth, one of them is completely in front of the two it is supposed to be between and they are very crowded.  Plus, I think I must have buck teeth on top since the two next to the middle teeth are pretty much 90 degrees from where they should be.  I'll spare you the pictorial.

Most people probably wouldn't notice, but they've bugged me since I was a kid, and my parents weren't much for dental care basics, let alone braces.  I have the cash and want to do it before our benefits get suckier for 2011.

This too shall come, one day, with a lift for the mammaries while we're at it.

  • You have just described my teeth to a tee(th)!  I have a very small mouth (as verified by my dentist), so the bottom teeth are pretty crowded.  My parents said no when my dentist suggested I get braces because they were hoping they'd straighten on their own (which they did significantly, but not quite enough).  My dad gave me the opportunity to get braces in late 8th/early 9th grade but I said no way since all my friends were just getting their braces off by then.

Dude, you're on.  A friend of mine turned 40 and her h asked what she wanted for her bday. She said tummy tuck because she was tired of tucking her stomach into her jeans.  She got one and is infinitely happier now.

  • I had invisalign. I got them last October and had them off the following June.

I am also on the small mouth crowd-y teeth train.  I was quite happy with the results.

You put in a new plastic tray every 2 weeks, and you wear them 22-23 hours a day, just taking them out to eat and brush your teeth. It does hurt for about a day when you first put a new tray in, but not too bad, just a general soreness, nothing some advil can't usually handle.

For a lot of people, you have to get these tiny white bumps put on some of your teeth. Depending on which way your teeth have to be moved, they help them move better or something. They are small and tooth covered, so still pretty much invisible. You know those little tooth jewels some people get? They're Kinda like that.  I had them and they weren't too bad. Although in a few spots they rubbed the inside of my mouth and made it hurt-y for a few days.

As well, you might want to time yourself so that your first couple of days with them in is over a weekend or something, because it is hard to get used to speaking with them in. At first it feels similar to if you have a pair of those fake dracula teeth in your mouth or something. I had a tiny lisp for a day or two, but I was determined to not be at work sounding more prepubescent than I already do, so I pronounced very carefully for a couple of days and was fine after that.

Some side benefits are that you brush your teeth after every time you eat, before you put them back in. So your dental hygiene ends up being impeccable. Also, it's good for people who have problems with snacking or drinking too much coffee, etc. Because every time  you want to eat something, you have to consider if it's worth the hassle of taking them out, eating, then finding a bathroom to thoroughly brush your teeth and put them back in. And you're only supposed to drink water with them in.

    WALL O TEXT!

  • I think TSD did it before her wedding but my memory may be well off. I dunno how often she stops in anymore.
  • I'm lazy. I may not want to have them off at the end. ;) Jens do you wear a retainer now?
    image
  • I should clarify, as a diet plan.

  • I had it. It worked. I had to have it for only 5 mo.  Did it before my wedding. My friend has it now and you'd never know it unless she told you. I think it's great.  People will say it doesn't work but they must have been to an unscrupulous dentist who got it for them somehow without that person being a good candidate for it.  If they tell you it will work for you and you do it exactly as they say, then it should work well.

My friend just had something called "smart lipo" on her stomach.  They do it in the office under local. I saw her abs and she now has a 6-pack. It's amazing.  She said it was like 4k.

  • Jens, does denim lorne have a tooth jewel? You seem to know about them.

  • I have a "permanent retainer" on my bottom teeth, since they were the most crowd-y and the most likely to go back to crooked. You're supposed to wear it for at least a year, and indefinitely if you want to be really careful. It's just a little wire attached to the back of my bottom front teeth, not visible and easy to get used to.

For my top, I have a retainer that I'm supposed to wear at night. I wore it religiously for a while. I'm lazy about it now, but still put it in intermittently for good measure and to make sure my teeth aren't moving back.

I'm glad I'm not the only one focusing on the important part of this post.

  • DenimLorne would never do such a thing. Denim, bigass TVs and large, unnecessary 3 and 4 wheeled vehicles are what DL's disposable income goes toward.

I'll have you know I've never had a tooth jewel either. I was just trying to illustrate the general size. From observation, NOT PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.  So get out my face!

You guys are way better at Elfster than me. I only got as far as adding some button to my bookmark bar and wishing for some tooth jewels. I couldn't figure out how to suggest an item I found off Elfster.

Teach me your ways, HT. Or did you find tooth jewels ON Elfster?
