New Furniture- WWYD?

Ok, so we close on the house in 10 days (Eeeek!) and DH and I found some furniture we like. We went out last weekend to some garage/estate sales and ended up finding some great furniture a lady is selling. We bought a computer desk and a lighted display cabinet already. The lady was also selling an off-white leather sectional sofa for $700! It didn't sell this past weekend, and DH really wants to get it. I'm not sure if it would go in our living room, or in the finished basement yet, but either way it would have a place in the new house.

My dilemma is this: 1- if we buy it we can't pick it up until next weekend at the earliest and I'm not too keen on buying something and then waiting over a week to pick it up from an individual, and I don't want to transport it somewhere for a few weeks and then move it again. 2- I know it's an amazing price for a leather sectional, but with all the other costs of buying the house I don't want to deplete our savings too much. So I'm torn- WWYD? DH is all for buying this sofa. I'm pretty sure it's because it reclines. ;)

Re: New Furniture- WWYD?

  • My question would be why can't you pick it up yet? I would only agree to give payment when you pick it up (or do you know her already?). Or can you put down a deposit so she knows you are coming to get it? I'm probably the worse person to ask b/c if I see a deal, I'm all about buying it and making it work, lol. GL

  • I don't really blame you for being wary of not being able to pick it up right away. Like Lisa said, maybe you can put down a deposit with the intention of final payment at pick-up. If you do that just make sure you get something in writing.

If it's a good deal, you have a space for it - because if you don't have a good use for it, then it's not a good deal - and you can afford it, then I would say go for it.

  • We don't have anywhere to put it because we are still in our apt. currently. So we won't have anywhere for it to go until we close on the house next week. :) I'm thinking maybe we'll ask if we can give her a little money to hold it for us and then come back for it after we close on the house. We'll see. Thanks!

  • Yeah, I would see if she'll take a small deposit, maybe like $50?  You could also just type up a receipt of that and have her sign it. Is she moving? If not, it's not like you don't know where she lives :)

Also, since it didn't sell already for $700, you could see if she'd be willing to go down to $600 or $650...
