Why I quit

caffeine.

First off, I am having serious acid reflux problems which my doctor thinks are causing my sinus issues. (read: the acid reflux acid goes into the sinuses and causes inflamation and mucus build-up). But secondly, after two days of being grumpy and fighting to keep my eyes open, I realized, I am addicted to caffeine.

It's no good and I know it's going to be hard, but I need to do this for my body and health. Anyone else kick the coffee? If so, what helped ease the headaches and moodiness. (keep in mind I typically have only 1 or 2 cups of coffee a day, in the morning).

Thanks y'all!

Re: Why I quit

  • Good luck. I had to go without caffeine for several days due to nausea from a medical procedure, and I had a pounding migraine for about 3 days. It was terrible. As soon as I could, I started right back up because I love my morning coffee.
  • I have weened DH from drinking about 3-4 POTS of coffee/day when I met him down to 3-4 cups per day. You might want to try mixing your regular coffee with an equal part of decaf for the first few days just to make the adjustment gradual and to help ease yourself out of the "ritual" of drinking coffee, too. You can gradually make the ratio heavier on the decaf, lighter on the caf, until you're down to only caf, and THEN go cold turkey, Or green tea. Or hot chocolate. Smile

Also, remember that some headache meds (like excedrin, i think) have caffeine in them, so steer clear of those if you want to treat a withdrawal headache.

    Good luck!!!

When I quit caffeine (many times) I find that gradually stepping down is the best way to do it. Quitting cold turkey suuuuucks big time.

  • When I was pg and cut back on coffee I would drink hot chocolate in the mornings just for the feel of holding a warm cup of something.

  • Doing part decaf definitely helps. Also, caffeinated coffee has calories and decaf doesn't, if that is any motivation :)

  • Okay, it's pretty nitty gritty - but according to SparkPeople, regular coffee has 3 calories and decaf has 0. So its not really a big deal but those are 3 more calories of something else you could be eating :)
  • I quit a couple of years ago for about 9 months...always 2 cups in the morning only and I'm not a big soda drinker so I wasn't getting caffeine elsewhere.

Having hot decaf tea in the morning helped a ton.  I also upped my vitamins including a B-complex which supposedly helps with energy levels.  I did suffer headaches for about a week but it wasn't terrible.
