I'm sick. Again.
Trying to keep my energy going long enough to get some work done, but it's not easy.
AND... last Sunday night I got a call from a friend who got a temporary restraining order againt her ex-boyfriend. She had court for the final restraining order Monday morning. She tends to be really scattered and drama-filled and want to fill her stories with lots of tangents and irrelevancies, which I know can piss off a judge and cloud the real issues, so I told her I'd go with her and represent her. For free.
We went, and of course, the ex asked for an adjournment; I knew he would when he saw she had a lawyer. I didn't object, because it's standard that the first request is granted anyway.
Well, sick as I am, and with Eric having just fallen asleep (late for him) and needing to wake up at 7:20 this morning for work... she called me at 12:50 last night (yes, 1 in the morning) to tell me that she'd just been served with a TRO from the ex. Yay. I'd warned her he might do that. If I was his lawyer, I'd advise him to do it (they had a rocky relationship, and the yelling and cursing was not all one-sided) and then either they'd both have reciprocal FROs against each other OR I (if I was his atty) would then go into court and suggest that both sides dismiss their restraining orders & walk away scott free. It's leverage. It doesn't always work, though, because it's fairly obvious to the judge that it's retaliation.
I think this guy's (the ex) biggest issue is that with an FRO in place, which is permanent in NJ, lifelong, he is never, ever, ever allowed to own a single weapon. And he has rifles. Which have been confiscated and will never be returned to him if an FRO is entered.
I've just written a novel, though, and the big point is this crazy 1 a.m. call... which is why it's good NOT to represent friends. Normal clients (who also pay me, besides) would have to wait 'til 9 a.m. and call my office. Or shoot me an email.
Yeah, I'm pissed. I talked to her a bit at 1 a.m. and didn't yell at her, but I'm putting off calling her today because I'm still too annoyed.

Greg and I are on a road trip.
Only 341 miles to go until we're in Montreal. He's driving while I get some work done.
We went 57 miles north of my last appointment before having to turn around and head back to it (it sucked but it was better than rescheduling for next week). Originally the demo was going to be canceled due to tech issues, but it was resolved. ...figures.
We're getting hungry so we may stop and at Diners Drive-Ins & Dives location for lunch.
Speaking of......Larissa - have you ever been to White Mana for sliders or the Bayway Diner in Linden?
Not in Linden, but there's a White Manna in Hackensack on River Street.
My mother LOVES their food. Loves. I like it, but I have to get past the very heavy greasy-burger smell of the place to be able to eat there.

Larissa and Marcy, I think your lives are so much more exciting than mine.
I'm at work, and I am bored out of my mind. I don't have anything really to do, but the boss is here, so I can't just fuzz on the internet all day. Sucks.
The most exciting thing I have going on is that I have been brainstorming what I hope is going to be a delicious dessert for Sunday. We're having friends over. It will go on my blog later, so I'm going to wait to tell you about it until then.
I'm at work and it's lame.
My boss has been out all week and I am exhausted.
I have been looking at puppies online all day. J is not happy with me. But he got it in my head, it's his fault.
Besides that, I've eaten like 1000 things today.
Ha, I'd take a slightly less exciting life if it meant I didn't get silly calls in the middle of the night. At least if she'd called my cell, it wouldn't have woken up E. Oh, and she didn't even say who it was, just started talking. I had to deduce. At 1 a.m.
I decided between that & the cold I've got, it was time to treat myself to a mud mask. I'm about to go wash it off and then finish the chocolate Hallween cat my sis brought me from Vermont.
There are some advantages to working for myself, I guess.

and because of it i now really want to go to sarcone's in philly for a junk yard special. wonder if it'd be worth the 2 1/2 hour drive?
i had a meeting this morning that was a demo of our new online application system. sad we're just going online now. went to fall convocation where the speaker did hip hop theater. it was corny but his message was good. boss has open office hours right now so students are in and out. dean's list reception this afternoon so i'll be here late. it's a weird day for me, usually i'm at my desk all day.
Well, now I'm more glad I'm representing my friend. She's on her way over here. That assh*le POS actually filed his TRO in PASSAIC County (where he lives). My friend's is in BERGEN County (where she lives). And he managed to get the FRO hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, 11/16... the SAME date & time as the Bergen County FRO hearing.
Obviously she can't be in two places at once.
So... it's a cute trick. Both applications arise out of the same set of facts & circumstances, so he was supposed to file it where the orginal was filed - in Bergen. He actually had to lie & say nothing was pending in any other court to file it.
He did it either:
1. Because he's really freaking stupid, because HE can't be in two places at the same time either, or
2. Because this way the Passaic County judge won't have my client's allegations in front of him and she's on the defense, not the offense, and they don't know in Passaic County that she filed first & his is just retaliation, or
3. Because he realizes that if she appears in Bergen, he'll get an FRO in Passaic County by default when she doesn't show... or if she appears in Passaic to defend herself, the FRO in Bergen will be dismissed as a default because of her no-show.
And today is Veteran's Day, the courts are closed, and I can't call them. I have left a message for the Bergen County judge to tell her what he pulled. Good, make him look like the POS he is. I don't know which judge in Passaic is scheduled to hear the other case.
But I really want to strangle this guy. Really.

After work DH and I hung up some window cling stuff in our living room. We have huge windows that are like zero % efficient. So until we can replace them, tacky window insulation it is!
And we got an early Christmas gift in the mail from my parents:
It can light up, and blow warm and hot air. Pretty cool! We've had it running all afternoon!
