this is hard

Ever since I found out I was pregnant I had baby names picked out. Mollie Joyce after my great grandmother and dh's  grandmother. Because I wanted to name my boy/girl after someone in my family that has passed away. Well when I told DH about the names that I liked he hated them! And then and went and told him mom... so she bought me a baby name book. I haven't gotten it yet....but I am still stuck on my name that I picked out. DH did tell me that I could use the name as a middle name so I was up last night because I couldnt sleep looking at names and I came up with Mikhaela Mollie for a girl. What do you guys think? Naming your child is hard when you're both stubborn!

Re: this is hard

  • I love the name Mollie.

Your other choice is a pretty name, but to be honest that spelling is awkward.  I prefer Michaela?  I have a student at school named Mikaela. I think your spelling looks odd to me because of the "kh" together.

  • I like the names and think they sound fine together are you hung up. I love the name Mikaela or Mikayla (this could stem from how much I use to love Dr. Quinn hee hee) dh said he does not like it though. Ugh

  • I think the names are cute. We're actually planning for Michaela Danielle if we have a girl... yeah, we're planning ahead.

my read shelf: Brianna's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • I love both the name Mikheala (though not fond of that spelling as someone else said) and Mollie.  But I am not fond of the names together, it doesn't flow for me, I think it might be the aliteration of the names, but I'm not sure.
  • Honestly, I think you need his input a bit more...  what does he like?  Traditional names? Trendy names? Shorten-able names?  Names he hates?

He'll only shoot you down after you've done lots of thinking and vetting, and there's no need to set yourself up AGAIN for disappointment.

Make it a joint conversation. Go through the books together -- or let him pick 20 names and you pick 20 names and you go through them to find commonalities.

  • (and for the record, you should avoid anything with P as a first name, if you're committed to Mollie as a middle name and Streff as a last name... :-)  Heck, I'm not even wild about MMS for "eminems", but it's way better than PMS!)
  • I like Mollie Joyce.  I think Mikhaela Joyce sounds better than Mikhaela Mollie.  Not crazy about the spelling that way but that's your choice not ours.

I agree with Kathy, you and DH need to talk about names a lot more before you get upset more when he doesn't like the names you have been wanting.  I like the idea of the list of 20 names each.

  • I know its hard when you have wanted a name for ever, but do yourself a favor and be a little more open and talk to your husband about what he likes. After all he did have something to do with the child being conceived.

Not really a fan of the way you spelled Mikhaela, but really I don't like any funky spelled names, just gets hard when you take the kid somewhere and they want a personalized magnet and surprise they can't find their name there.

Plus you may not think it fits her or him anyway when he or she is born (I don't know if you ever saw the Friends episode when Rachel had her baby and they decided that she wasn't either name that they had originally picked out). Just my two cents. Its your kid, name it whatever you want. Just make sure you have your husband's input.

Oh and yes please don't give your child the initials PMS that would just be a therapy bill waiting to happen.

  • I agree that this maybe somethign you guys need to sit down and do together so you don't end up falling in love with names and then he shoots them down again.  I like the idea of each coming up with your own lists and comparing and going from there, or going through the book together to find a name that you will both be 100% happy with.
  • NMS personally, I also don't think it flows well at all.  As much as you love the name you have picked, don't disregard his thoughts and feelings. You really do need to sit down and discuss it together. Don't shut him out, he needs to be part of this process.

We each had names we loved and we kept narrowing the list down, until we settled on one name we loved together. We focused on the first name only, once we did that I made a list of middle names that would flow with it. It didn't matter if I liked or not, it went on the list for discussion. From that list we chose a middle name together. Just a suggestion of what worked for us.

  • Also, I like the rhythm of a 2 syllable name with ___ Mollie Streff, where the first syllable is the dominant.

And the second syllable shouldn't be a "ley" like whitley or ashley or Kelly.

    For instance:

    Kathryn Mollie Streff

    Eva Mollie Streff

    Leah Mollie Streff

    Hannah Mollie Streff

    Lauren Mollie Streff

     aaaaand So on. :-)

I'll totally let you offer suggestions if we find out we're having a boy.  There are no boy names that I am absolutely set on.  Drew doesn't really have any either.

I know I love Mollie Joyce too, it still on my list. Mikhaela is a name DH picked out, dont know how much it is because of Transformers:) but the weird spelling is the Hebrew spelling of it. I am all for odd spellings, but that is just me. I left the name on a sticky note in the bathroom for him to see this morning. He said that it could be on the list.

Mollie doesn't go very well I think as a middle name though. And dont worry girls PMS is already off the list!!!!

I think I'm actually better with boy names than with girl names.

    I just like naming things.

    1) I have a desktop/easel dry erase board, that's about 11" by 11". People comment about it all the time.  I call it my "DryPad".

    2) If you have seen Dunkin Donuts new "Pancake Bites", theyre small sausage rounds wrappedin pancake batter.  I've decided they needed to call them "Brunchkins".

    3) Have you ever seen the computer screens with news and such in elevators in office buildings?  I call them "Elevisions".

See? I'm very clever. Who WOULDN'T want me to name their child?

This was my thought as well.  Some names to me seem very much a first name only.  However, I do like it in some of the names that Kathy posted.  Maybe it will work, but only if you have a 2 syllable first name.
