high school reunions in the age of Facebook

What's the first thing that comes to mind when someone says "high school reunion"? For me it's - Um, no. Haha.

My 10 year h.s. reunion is next year! Indifferent Um, no. Is it weird that it's been 10 years and yet I feel like it's way too soon?! lol. It's not until November '11 and I already have no intention of going. In the world of Facebook, I'm already in touch with people I care to be. Of course there's a FB Group for my h.s. reunion and all these people are like "ZOMG! SO AWESOME!" and I'm like "holy hell please no."

Plus, I went to an all-girls h.s. and the reunion is with the 2001 graduating class from our brother school, and I knew like 2 guys from that class. So basically it's going to be lots of girls I'm not in touch with + tons of guys I don't know. Party?

I wonder if Facebook is killing or helping the whole high school reunion thing? On one hand, I don't have to pay $$ to have crappy food and weak drinks to catch up with people I wasn't friends with in h.s. On the other hand, I can see where it could be a fun way to see LOTS of people you are now in contact with via FB.

Re: high school reunions in the age of Facebook

  • I didn't go to mine... it was 3 years ago and actually ALOT of people didn't go.  Out of a class of 206 I think there was only 40 people if that there.  I wasn't going to pay $75 pp to hang out with a bunch of people I'm not a fan of.  And that if I really wanted to see anyone, there was facebook or myspace.

    I'm glad I skipped.

  • My 10 year is next year too.  Woot class of 2001!  I still can't decide if I want to go or not.  One of my best friends is probably going to help organize it so if she does I'll want to support her and her planning efforts.
  • i went to my five year and my ten year - which was in '09 thankyouverymuch!

i also went to an all girl's school, but we didn't partner up with any of the guy's schools for our renunions. FB wasn't around for my five year, but it obvs was for my 10 year. i went just bc all my girlfriends were going, it was a week after i got back from my wedding, and i needed to let loose and have a good time. and did i ever.

  • I probably won't go, it'd cost a ton to travel to it and there's a reason I don't really talk to anyone from HS anymore other than on fb.
  • I think it might effect it a little. My 10 year was 2 years ago and I went but I was not on FB yet. It was defiantly cool to go and see people face to face (others I did not care for, lol). But I see most of my close HS friends when ever I go home (which is only 2 hours away). Think it kinda depends on everyone's individual situation

This exactly! Mine was last year. Like the weekend after we had just gotten back from our wedding. DH & I went to HS together (but no we are not hs sweathearts...we didn't even hang out with the same crowd in hs! how funny!) and we decided not to go.

Honestly, I don't feel bad about it either. I see those that I care to see on a regular basis & the others I can catch up with on FB. And then there are some that I don't even care about at all!

  • I was in the same boat as you...mine was just a few weeks ago. I went to an all-girl HS and the reunion was with the all-guy school that graduated in 2000 as well. I am friends with SO many people on FB and we have had the chance to catch up recently, so i didnt think it would be worth it, especially since it was so expensive!
  • My 10 year was 5 years ago when everyone was on Myspace but it wasn't as popular or an every day thing like FB is.  My response anyway was...um, no!  My thought is why should I pay money to go to a "party" filled with people I didn't even like back then!  There's no point in pretending, so I'm just not going.  Our whole 10 year was canceled due to lack of interest.  Now, our 15 year is coming up and I wonder if anyone will even bother putting one together.  If they do, I still won't go.   No thanks!
  • I am passing on mine.  I live in a small town and get all the dirt at the grocery store.  For real.  Just yesterday I found out my 8th grade bestie got her second DUI.  Other than that, I occasionally see people at large annual functions.  We catch up yearly.  And then there is facebook.  I see no reason to pay the money to go.  They had Timm's 10 year at a bar...with no dinner.  Yes, they're klassy like that.

They knew what everyone was going for! lol.

  • My 10 year is in 2012, and I'm still undecided if I want to go or not.  I don't think I really talk to anyone from HS, I didn't really even want to go to my graduation, I just wanted to get out of there.  I live a few hours away from there now, so it might be nice to see some of the people I did get along with.  Even on FB I really don't keep in touch with people.

  • Mine is in 2012 too and I'm not sure if I'll go. If my other friends from hs go I will too just because then I have people to hang out with. I went to my 5 yr which was at a bar (klassy like Timms'!). There weren't a ton of people at that one but I think people thought it was too soon for a reunion.

Now, if it happens that I'm PG and big as a house I absolutely WILL NOT be going.
