suggestions for games?!?!?

Hey all,

So DH and I decided to "adopt" a family through the local domestic abuse organization for the holidays.  We got our family and it's a single mom with her 13 year old daughter.  They gave us a list of things they would like and I'm at a loss!!

The 13 year old asked for board games.  For the life of me, I can't think of any board games that I liked when I was 13!!! This is all kept annonymous so it's not like I can contact her and say "hey, what games exactly do you want??"

I've been googling,e tc. and anytime i come lup with a gift list for teenagers, the only games are electronic/video games.  In this case 1- she asked for board games, and 2- i don't want to assume that they even have a tv,dvd player, video game system, etc.

Any suggestions for games that she might enjoy??

  • Well, Monopoly is a classic.  They have all kinds of versions of Monopoly now, so you may be able to find a teen-suited one.

I always loved (and still love) Scrabble and Clue.  Uno is always fun, but not a board game per se.

  • ohhhhh, I didn't even think of clue!  THanks!

I guess i'm having a hard time with this b/c there are lot of games that I enjoy now (some of which my may geered toward kids), but i just can't remember playing anything when I was an early teen.

  • How about: Jenga, Pictionary, or Battleship.

  • I liked Taboo, Cranium, Catchphrase, Balderdash, and Trivial Pursuit (maybe you can get her a Special Edition, based on her interests).  I still liked Pictionary, Monopoly, Sorry, and Clue at that age but I'm not sure if all 13-year olds do.

I know they're not board games, but there are also a lot of fun card games like Uno (in its many forms that now exist), Set, etc that you could get.  I would probably just go to Target and browse the games section and see what looks age-appropriate!

  • Apples to Apples and Scattergories are some of my favorites too!

The only reason I didn't say Pictionary or Cranium or one of those is that they're not as fun to play if there aren't a lot of people.  If you get her something like Scrabble or Sorry, it's a game that just she and her mom can play at least.

  • I received Scattegories Jr for my 12th birthday and loved it. I also loved Taboo and other games that required participation from family.  Scene It is a new favorite and they have a ton of different ones too.
    Married at last!!
  • Cranium, Monopoly and Scrabble would be my top 3!

  • My only reservation with Scene It is that it requires a DVD player, right?  I was thinking maybe this person might not have one, and it would suck to get that as a present if that's the case.

Also, I would not assume that just because the girl is 13, she likes Twilight.  It's a love-it-or-hate-it franchise, so unless you KNOW she likes it, stay away.  I would have been incredibly insulted at 13, in the angsty way that 13-year-olds can be insulted, if I got something Twilight-related as a gift.  You know, "Oh my GAWD I can't believe this person thinks I'm some kind of insipid brainless Twilight fan" or "Ugh this person thinks I'm like TWELVE when I'm clearly a mature thirteen year-old." Commence dramatics and theatrics about how mindless my fellow classmates are, or how adults don't understand teenagers.

Of course, if I liked Twilight I would have been excited, but it's a gamble.
